I was thinking more in terms of the religion (you know, because them darn Islamics don’t celebrate Christmas…) and the style of music / chanting usually associated with terrorism in US media, which you could accurately still refer to as Islamic, rather than the language used.

You would think that but that's not correct plenty of Educated people in America with xenophobic ideas + religious zeal. I would wager the latter are far more dangerous than a few idiots.

English isn't actually the official of the US. They don't have one. It's been brought up a couple of times, but it was deemed too divisive.

    Guess they were right. :-)

English is the official language of about half the states in the US.

    that's mine too!

i love the fact what is lost on these people (besides the grammatical/spelling rules of the english language) is the fact English is a language from England,

    which is *drumroll* foreign! :D

It's sad because those kind of people giving out about the Ad ruin it for genuine and reasonable Americans. I know many of them and I'm glad to. And it just reinforces many people's perceptions that Americans are ignorant and xenophobic and hostile.

    Other languages suck. English rocks.

Yes, there is uproar about this ad alright in the US, so many news sources are complaining about this but you were only able to find some lad's blog posting about this where he quotes a handful of twitter posts.

An English friend of mine had the experience of being asked by someone in the US "What language do you speak in your country? Your English is really good!"

(This was after a long conversation about how she was from ENGLAND)

They also kept telling her they didn't serve that in America when she asked for "water". So she kept having to order coke or beer as they just couldn't understand her.

Irish people actually have fewer problems in the US (unless you've a totally weird accent) as we pronounce H and R closer to US English. It's just that we also tend to use loads of words they don't understand.

Yep, but it's not the official language of the USA. USA doesn't have an official language if I'm not mistaken....

What they don't realise, is that they're all immigrants, except for the natives, who are treated like shyt.
    Silly nation.

The natives are immigrants too. They arrived about 12,000 years ago.

The official language of the USA was very nearly German. German being the biggest ethnic group.

True. The margin was tiny, only a few votes, if I remember correctly.

In fairness they should have sung it in Native American.

Would have been some length of an ad - there are about 296 languages to get through.....

Certain controversial evidence points to the original human inhabitants of North America being of European origin!

Urban myth I'm afraid. If the USA has never had an official language how could it nearly have been German?

Those comments are really stupid but I don’t think as Irish people we really have a right to get on a high horse and judge them about being annoyed about immigrants using their home languages or generally not integrating (the subtext to the complaints about the ad) given the lower numbers of immigrants in Ireland and the relatively greater amount of moaning about them.

I love how the Super Bowl champions are "Champions of the World" in the sport. But mention any country other than America and fcuk me you're a terrorist.

It doesnt take much for some americans to be outraged. Remember the Dixie chicks said we are ashamed that George Bush was from Texas. Within days their career was ruined. They were banned from being played on a majority of stations, their CDs were dumped and they received death threats to the extent all concerts had metal detectors.

Go against the norm in America and you will get a lot of hate. But coca cola is one of the smartest companies and wont air an advisement that cost millions without being sure it would increase sales

Eh, remember the time they renamed French Fries "Freedom Fries" because the French wouldn't invade Iraq with them...

What was even funnier about it is the term French fries actually came from WWI when French speaking Belgians introduced them to "Pommes Frites" which were a traditional Belgian thing. US troops apparently though they were French hence the name "French Fries".

The French consider them an Americanism associated with McDonalds.
Calling them French Fries in the first place was probably a slur against French cuisine :D

It's like how the French call custard "English Cream" (creme anglaise)
There were people boycotting French's Mustard which is actually a US product and nothing to do with France at all.

I actually find the hostility displayed against the French in the US and sometimes in England is just utterly weird.
Particularly considering that the French even gave them the present of the Statue of Liberty.

In 1838, Joseph Smith led a group of followers seventy miles north of present-day Kansas City, Missouri. There he founded a new settlement that he called Adam-ondi-Ahman. The place is significant in Mormon history for it is here that Smith claimed the first man, Adam, lived.

    Adam-ondi-Ahman

According to Smith, the Garden of Eden was located in Jackson County, Missouri and following his expulsion from the Garden, Adam traveled northward to a place near modern-day Gallatin, Missouri. Mormon Apostle Orson Pratt stated that the name Adam-ondi-Ahman “is in the original language spoken by Adam, as revealed to the Prophet Joseph” (Journal of Discourses 18:343).

Tenth Mormon President Joseph Fielding Smith wrote,

"In accord with the revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, we teach that the Garden of Eden was on the American continent located where the city of Zion, or the New Jerusalem will be built. When Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden, they eventually dwelt at a place called Adam-ondi-Ahman, situated in what is now Daviess County, Missouri" (Doctrines of Salvation 3:74).

Move over Ballyjamesduff ......... the Garden Of Eden is elsewhere.:D Percy French is not Joseph Smith :)

Can you imagine the furore if they did it with Nash's Red Lemonade?
