What's the longest you slept for?

Yesterday I came off a long stint of night shifts. Added to that I've been on antibiotics for a throat infection, hadn't eaten properly in a few days because of that, and was emotionally exhausted because of other life-related stuff.

Met a friend for breakfast yesterday morning, went to bed at about 1pm Sunday afternoon and woke a few wee hours ago at 6am.

    I'm hugely confused, Ted.

That's a solid 17 hours' kip. A personal best for me.

    What's the longest you've slept?

Also 17 hours after a week of 12-hr night shifts way back when I was 20. No medication though - just exhaustion!

    26 hours! :o

I had a number of days' traveling under my belt, after a prolonged period on a busy project. I don't recall waking up for even a minute during that snooze, but I did wake up juuuust in time for dinner on Christmas day! :pac:

16 hours straight also after a few days of 12 hour overnights. So satisfying.

26 hours!!! That's amazing, well done you.
It was completely dead sleep too, which is so rare for me, usually a gust of wind will wake me.
Had my phone up to the loudest volume and missed 5 work calls, a few from my boyfriend and the mammy.
Like a lump of dead wood.
    Bizarre!

I'm pretty sure no sleep is the cousin of death, at least that's what it feels like when you regularly can't sleep. Which for me is a lot recently :(

Does a medically induced coma count? If so, eleven days! mad dreams during that "sleep"!

Other than that, nothing of significance really

Remember once as a teenager sleeping for about 16 hrs, after what was only planned as a nap after an 18-20 journey envolving a few coaches and a ferry crossing.

Occasionally now I might sleep for about 12-14 hrs if I have been on nights. Generally though a nights sleep would be a maximum of 7-8.

I have slept for about 14-15 hours in one go. If I'm really tired, I tend to take short sleeps on the coach for about an hour and nap.

I used to ask this question to my students as it opend up the topic of sleeping and health for a more general discussion/vocabulary building exercise.

One time, I asked it, and got the usual answers - 12 hours, 13, 15 hours after travel ('Do you know the word "jetlag"?'). Then one guy said '36 hours', and we all just kind of went quiet, wondering if anybody would call him on what we assumed was bullsh!t.

Then he told a story about an incident when he was a member of the Japanese Self Defence Force, and his helicopter had crashed into the ocean. He'd bailed out on a lifeboat, but had to wait something like 7 days to be rescued, and didn't sleep at all for that time (understandably).

I believe somewhere around 16 or 17 hours was my record.

About 14 hours after a particularly traumatic flight to Canada. Had been awake for the guts of 2 days. Zero craic. Or once when I had a particularly bad bout of the flu I crawled into bed on a Monday and emerged some time on the Thursday.
