One straight couple I know are considering demanding a civil partnership to show how ridiculous the whole lack of marriage equality is.

They suggested that they would no longer perform the civil marriage part after the wedding if same sex marriage happened.

    That's within their right.

I'd like to see everybody have go through a civil ceremony.
If you want a religious ceremony as well then that is your option.
Plenty of countries are set up like this.

    Entirely speculative so far but

@goldenshots: BREAKING: unconfirmed reports that John Waters got 30k from @rte & IONA ppl got 11k each. Beyond outrageous if true. #TeamPanti #pantigate

If that's true...that's outrageous. Will have to see if it holds any truth.

Edit: Second source saying it's 52k.

This is the case in lots of countries: you have to go to an office and do the civil thing even if you get "catholic" married by a priest. I think it would be no harm to separate the two in people's heads.

That is the situation in France for example and it seems to work fine.
They like to keep a proper separation of church and state what with being an actual republic and all and actually meaning "liberté, egalité, fraternité" rather than just paying lip service to it.

They had their big gay marriage debate too and it turned nasty, but it passed.

France has a *big* and very increasing problem with far right politics though which plays into a lot of those kinds of debates.

The church threatening to refuse to sign and process civil marriage paperwork will simply result in a lot more couples deciding they're more hassle than they're worth and going for the totally civil option.

To be honest I thought the Church would do this anyway. It would mean that only actual Catholics who want to get married in a Church under the eyes of their god and religion would do so.

Well, it's a religious organisation but it's also a charity/business of sorts too. No weddings = less money = roof falling in & priests not being paid.

    They're more pragmatic than you'd think :)

Like any organisation, bums on seats counts - particularly if they're paying the bills. So, frightening off the punters by turning all dogmatic isn't likely to happen.

Call me a cynic, but I am pretty convinced that's what's driving the current reforms at the vatican. They can see the writing on the wall (and in the current account).
Organisations don't survive for the length of time the Catholic Church's been around without being quite savvy about the PR & marketing.

He was on the BAI, RTÉ's regulator.

I'd imagine that it was pointed out that he could hardly take cash off RTÉ and continue in the role, so he quit and took the cash.

It's still not confirmed, but utterly sickening if true, and I hope RTE get into a lot of **** over it.

Is this a job for the Public Accounts Committee?

They're kinda the new super-heros of the Dail! (I say that with my tongue in my cheek)

Should anyone wish to raise any issues about public moneys with them :

    Here's the current membership list:

    http://www.oireachtas.ie/parliament/oireachtasbusiness/committees_list/public-accounts/members/

If RTE are spending public money, it would surely be within their remit to look into it?

    And so was more damaged?

    And so was more damaged?

This wasn't damages awarded by a court, this was Pay-Up-Or-Else money.

Waters had more Else to threaten them with.

Though his comments are most easily identifiable as homophobic. Far less nuanced.

Oh, this looks interesting. Irish Times journalist Ronan McGreevy just tweeted that Pat Rabbite has made some statements on this fiasco, including "those who dish the stick should be able to take it too."

Did he just tell the Iona Institute to grow a pair, if you'll excuse the expression?

As Geoff Shorts said recently, like any good follower of Jesus they'll give it all to the poor and not interfere in non-Judeo-Christian marriage.

Why are they allowed to call themselves an Institute. They are lobbyists not scholars or researchers. Its misleading to the average person when a survey or report is cited and is made by The Iona Institute. Credible name for a sickening organisation

There is no naming convention in Ireland for the word Institute. I could set up the Institute of Apples and Oranges and it would be fine.
