On this miserable morning I open my email only to discover I've just won £650,000 from the UK lotto !!!! Never even bought a ticket. Apparently my email address is attached to a "World Wide Web computer generated ticket".

I simply have to provide a number of details (not including my bank a/c) to collect. Surely this is legit ??? Although I'm wondering why the payout comes from South Africa* ?

*Please note that you’re lucky winning ticket file and number falls within our African booklet representative office in Johannesburg South Africa, as indicated in your ballot played coupon. In view of this, your (£650,000.00) would be released to you by our payment department in South Africa

Any other lucky winners here ?

It's quite possible you are not the first person to which this has happened :P

    I also get spam emails.

Simples. They obviously outsource the payment processing to reduce overheads, so they can pay out even more prizes.

If only Rehab would consider doing the same they'd probably get a better return on their investment.

I must say that I always find couching the subject of spam and phishing letters/emails in a mock serious vein - with a teaser title - to be a most excellent comedic vehicle that is in no way overused in After Hours.

It's a great prank to send letters on Prize Bonds headed paper to friends, write it real formally, mention that due to the high amount of the prize it normally isnt done by cheque so somebody will be in touch shortly.
Most people have prize bonds somehow.

Often they'll buy drinks for the night (sometimes for the whole bar)

There are scams going round regarding claiming your tax back - beware. The fact it's in "Irish pounds" is dodgy enough.

Would love to help you celebrate but I'm helping out a Nigerian lad at the moment who is trying to move €20,000,000 out of the country so his family won't get it. Wouldn't mind but he's royalty and seems to be getting the short end of the stick.

Never mind. I've just come up trumps. Can't believe I'm so lucky. Won't be cashing the tax rebate. Jesus, just this morning I ordered $650 of heating oil ...... it's -13*C outside ....... and as soon as I collect the first few hundred thousand am off to The Bahamas for the winter. $24 million! It still hasn't sunk in!

There is a site dedicated to people taking the p1ss out of these scammers.

Some of them go to enormous trouble and have great fun. The idea is to string them along as far as you can.

A couple of years ago, I received an email from "AIB" asking me to confirm all of my personal and bank details by filling out an attached online form. There were even 100 numbered boxes for me to input all of my code card numbers. :)
