I seem to top about as many as I connect with cleanly.
In the short rough I'm grand as obviously there a bit more room for error. Especially with placing!

Is there any tips/techniques you guys have that I could work on?
    Thanks.

If you look at all the top guys hitting woods off the fairway they all take a good divot with them, you are probably just too use to hitting your woods off tee's, dont be afraid to hit down on the ball on the fairway with the woods, takes a bit of practise, the mats in the driving range wont help as there very forgiving compared to real fairways.

I had the same problem. In my case I was swaying off the ball to my right side in my backswing that left it very difficult to find the ball on the way through impact. The rough and the tee kinda masked my low point as you are hitting more through the ball.

It could be totally different in your case.

Have you ever seen your swing on video?

You're right I never ever seem to take any fairway with me when I connect.
I'll try take a chunk next time!

Yeah I've seen my swing on video. It's bloody awful. I'm tall and have a technique that just looks wrong, but it somehow works for me. Apart from off the fairway, it's be far and away my biggest weakness.

With you being tall as you say and you top the ball a lot have you tried concentrating on staying down over the ball swinging through the ball. Could it be a case you are coming up off the shot trying to get the ball up hence causing a top?

I can't say I've gone out of my way to concentrate on staying down. So maybe that's something. Maybe sometimes I try too hard or am thinking about it too much.

Play the ball nearer to the middle, you have to really make a shift left to get a downward or flat angle of attack if it's off your left foot, and try take a shallow Divot

Also, Hogan had a great tip for staying down in the shot, but also for power. Put your arse against the wall, make a swing, concentrate on squeezing right cheek at top of backswing, then sliding your arse flat and too the left on the wall, then squeeze left cheek. On following through left cheek should still be touching wall, ie no standing out of the shot .

I wouldn't consider myself a good ball striker at all but my 5w is generally my go to club for 200yds +

I put the ball middle if my stance and sqing at a slightly downward angle and try to catch the arse of the ball. My bad hits are when its too steep and kind of pop the ball up but it still moves up the fairway.

    A couple of simple tips:

    • move to ball slighly more toward centre of your stance, as this will help you compress the ball on impact.
•Slow your swing down....... A nice smooth rythm along with a decent strike will produce just as good a result as when you try to kill it.

I spotted this recently on a Swing by Swing email they send me.

Wow, SwingbySwing tip that looks good.!!! I Like this guy.

Clement's tip is to practice gently bouncing the sole of the club against the ground. Works on nice hard short fairways, not sure about Irish ones though.

    Ever try a 2 hybrid?

For hitting fairway woods and hybrids off the deck, you hit down but do you hit up with woods and hybrids when the ball is on a tee? Like the driver.

I'd say it would depend on ball position. With the driver its more forward in your stance so your natural arc is on the way up when you connect with the ball. I've seen some play woods and hybrids from between middle to front of stance off the Tee.
