The magazine racks are packed with the stuff.Saw seven or eight different different mags with Jordan in the cover one day.
There's obviously a huge demand for for it,even in serious publications like The Times.

Jordan seems to be on the cover of several of these mags EVERY week.....EVERY FCUKING WEEK. There was a time when she was just a page-3 tart who was photoed once in a while locked out of her head in some London club. Now she's on a mag cover every week. Thing is she doesn't even get her kit off anymore. Now it seems just the same rehashed gibberish about how crap her ex was in bed or whose boyfriend she shagged.

Have to say, I've noticed a huge decrease in the amount of coverage that Jordan and Paris Hilton in particular get over the last couple of years. No harm either. Can't say I've much time for either.

It absolutely has happened. I can't remember if it was on ITV or Channel 4, but you're watching a film and at around 10pm they interrupt the movie with 'entertainment news' for a couple of minutes

'And now for your live entertainment news update' with irritating jarring music that is actually stuck in my head right now while some sparkly dressed young presenter rattles off the kind boring gossip nonsense and ruins the mood of the film you're trying to watch

I haven't had it happen in a while, maybe they've stopped but it definitely happened.

It still happens on ITV4 I think, some young one with the most annoying voice in the world spouting rubbish.

Not really. The media don't need to convince people that celebrities are interesting. Some people just want to hear about what Victoria Beckham wears rather than try to understand the Middle East or Syria. It's not a conspiracy, people are genuinely interested in that stuff and not so much in conflicts in places they couldn't point out on a map or that they don't have any connection with.

If that's what they want and celebrities are happy to play the game (knowing the money they'll make outweighs the intrusion) then, as much as I don't care for that type of culture, more power to them.

We know it's not a conspiracy. A conspiracy is when two or more people plot to commit a crime. The celebrity gossip crap is to distract the smellies from crimes and conspiracies.

Dunno, I go into my local spar to pick up a 6pack and walk past the mag-stand. I am now conditioned to scan the glossies in search of the "hussy of Essex". She's always there.

It might be cool to say "I've never heard of them, blah, blah, flicks hair, blah, cappuchino" but there's an awful lot of people who absorb every detail, follow every emerging gobdawh and have The X factory on series record in case they miss Justin Cyrus or whoever belting out a cover of Pink Cadillac while wearing next seasons must-have Burberry jock-strap.

For every one "I hate it, it's crap" there has to be a thousand fans of the "genre". Otherwise why would it be shoved out like celeb-sausage-meat from almost every media orifice? And why else would a massive Benny like Louis Walsh be so wealthy, not to mention the high-waisted one. There's a market for this flim-flam, you personally might not be a part of that market, but there damn sure are plenty who are.

Definitely still happens. ITV4 on Tuesday night, I was watching Tomorrow Never Dies. It goes to ad break as normal but before going back to the movie there was 2-3 minutes of inane celebrity gossip. I'm pretty sure most people watching that kind of movie couldn't give a rat's arse which celeb had a new boyfriend and which celeb was releasing a new album.

Was reading a lad in works Evening Herald the other day and every second page was filled with stories about non-entities like Bressie or Kathryn Thomas, and pictures of Irish 'models' at the launch of a cattle immunisation scheme,or something equally as glamorous.

The Irish version of British tabloids seem even worse judging by their front pages I see in the newsagents every morning.

I generally just read the Guardian on my phone for world stuff, and use Twitter for Irish news by following non eejits.

You don't know who Ronan Keating is? Sure you don't.

I hate when people pretend not to know famous people because they think it makes them look cool.

I don't really care about celebrities too much but I do read the odd thing on entertainment.ie about certain famous people.
They're just rich, more interesting and better looking versions of us so that's what makes people want to read about them. They entertain us with their various talents and that makes us want to know all about them.

I also hate the fact that people seem to think that others are dumb for having an interest in celebrities. Just because someone reads the odd thing about them doesn't mean it's ALL they do!

    say what now?
I honestly cannot remember whether Ronan Keating is a soccer player, a singer or an actor, I really can't (and I am not going to google it). And I truly do not care either way - don't need to look cool or think I look cool, I'm way too old for that. :P

I personally don't even think people are dumb for having an interest - whatever keeps the masses happy, really, and ultimately the 'celebs' (whatever that means these days) need to keep the media going, as this is what pays their wages. But the hype about them definitely distracts from bigger or more relevant issues that may be going on in the world.

Honestly its nice sometimes to be lighthearted and imagine that you had the life of a 'celeb' with all the fame, glitz and glamour attached to it, but really it is just crazy that the media shoves this stuff down out throats.

Personally I couldn't care less about who ronan keating and michael fassbender are going out with, or how many kids chris hemsworth is having. Most of us don't know these people so why would anyone want to know about them. At the end of the day they are humans like the rest of us.
So I wonder why do the media feed us this daily as 'news', perhaps people are just brainwashed? I really don't understand it.

You're completely right and in my eyes their is no getting away from it.
As soon as you walk into a shop you'll see the tabloids and quite possibly the headline will be regards the flavor of the month and had they're getting their bits out right there on the front page.

Radio stations could do with ditching our morning celeb updates too. Even shows like "the last word", have celebrity driven stories from time to time. Driving into work I'd often hear about Niall Horan. I have absolutely nothing against him but these stories are also often quite empty. Maybe he gave the finger to a fan or something, who really needs to know that though on national radio!

Even After Hours has threads about celebrities. It must be one of the most common reasons a thread gets locked? How Justin Bieber stories have been on After Hours. Countless. I don't believe anyone in this country can get away from it unless they're living in a cave or Leitrim maybe :P

    Example A

Because it sells / makes those media organizations money.

If it didn't, they wouldn't do it.

The only problem I have with it all is that I keep seeing the name Kardashian everywhere and I wish they would just go away. I obviously don't click on articles about them, but just the fact that I see constant links to those articles, winds me the fcuk up, but I could solve that by avoiding the sites that would have them I suppose, which I don't and won't as I like other aspects of those sites, so my own fault really.

However, you can't always avoid the fcukers. There has been a Kardashian advert running in the cinema for six months that shows one of the bints slavering all over an ice cream bar. I try to time my entrance into the auditorium so that I will avoid seeing the make-up drenched wagon but often it's not to be as the ad is on just seconds before the films start and so I will invariably arrive just as she is trying to look sexy, at which point I will usually scream and punch some randomer's popcorn out of their hand.

I'd be lying also if I said I didn't enjoy some of the articles based on celeb papping. In fact part of me would die if I was to think that I'd never again see some nip slip pics or even some good old pit bush ones, which Julia Robert is unquestionably the queen of . Love me some of those. As long as they are not set up, that is, or happen accidentally on purpose, as that's just cheating.

Also love a good sex tape. Again, not the planned crap like Paris Hilton, but seeing Imogen Thomas getting boned, even if it was dimly lit, was great stuff altogether. Now, I'm in no way shape or form excusing the theft of such material, not for a second but I would just love if someone stole a sex tape of Jennifer Lawrence getting ravished. Or Mila Kunis, or even Selena Gomez, or that chick Oliva Wilde. Rumour has it that there is one of Emma Stone also, now that would be awesome. Also a rumour that there is a Charlize Theron one floating about. Can you imagine if Zooey Deschanel made one with all these girls and it was like a massive all-girl orgy tape made the night of an awards ceremony and cause they all looked so hot in thier designer dresses, they just couldn't keep their hands of each other and so hired the penthouse suite and where all doing it in some massive sunken bath tub like the one in Scarface and then mistakenly thinking the room was his, Patrick Stewart walks in and as nobody has time to put their clothes on.. he sees them all naked.

What do you get out of seeing JR with armpit hair?

    Mucho respecto.

Maybe I should have changed the title to "why do the media publish this stuff' then.

I spent a few years working for a local paper when I was teenager (basically every summer holiday through secondary and then a year or two after finishing school).

Even back then they would take notes on what sales they get with what front page headlines.

Marilyn Manson gets secret lover pregnant = 350 sales
Joe Soap councellor calls for investigation into illegal dumping = 200 sales

This was only a small business that covered a small town, I can only just imagine the big boys like the Indo are doing even more extensive note taking.

But I can absolutely guarantee you there is no mass conspiracy to dumb us down, or distract us from real issues or any other conspiracy theory.

Its literally all about money and getting good sales every week.

On another note look at rte player the programs always have some misery twist attached to the core, the radio talk shows are full of cranky presenters and negativity and then they spin you trash news of celebrities living it up to make you feel like crap. There are people stetting these agendas, dont buy into it.
Been doing my best to avoid all news unrelated to my career for a long time now.

Celeb news is very cheap to produce. Scan Tmz, talk to some PR people, etc.

I'd say the majority of 'celeb' news would end up in the man's edition. Let's face it, the entire sports section is nothing but celeb news. 'A bunch of rich men played a game for three hours on Saturday. Let's talk about it!'

I don't care about sport but that's a ridiculous argument. Celeb news is news about what celebs do in their private life. It's celeb gossip to print about Leonard di Caprio's love life, it's not celeb news to review a movie he is in.

I think we're splitting hairs over what 'celeb news' means. If I Google 'Celeb News' the number one result takes me to E-Online (http://uk.eonline.com/). If I Google 'Football News' the number one result takes me to BBC Sport (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/).

And they are pretty much identical, to my eyes.

Pictures of celebs or athletes, interviews they've given, analysts talking about their last public appearance, analysis of their performances, awards dinners/rankings.

One thing I really hate is news slots on the radio you'd have:

Item 1: Factory closes down with loss of x amount of jobs
Item 2: x amount of people killed pin a car crash
Item 3: issues with a Quango
Item 4: Bieber stokes romance rumour after selfie posted on twitter

I hate when people pretend not to know famous people because they think it makes them look cool.

I hate it when people say crap like that. Why do you presume it's an act?

In fairness, I do know who Ronan Keating is! But there are an awful lot of clebs I haven't a clue who they are.
Sometimes I might have heard of them, but not know what they're famous for and that type of thing.

I don't watch the telly, don't listen to the radio, don't read magazines, and don't read the paper. If I come across an article on some celeb, I'll just pass over it and give it no thought.

I'm even more ignorant when it comes to sports of any kind.

It is just pure lack of interest and nothing whatsoever to do with wanting to appear cool!

Not knowing certain names is very suspect however. I never watch, listen to, or buy tabloids or watch tabloids news ( despite the OP's claim most news on TV is serious) but not knowing certain names is near impossible.
