How long does it take for a cheque to officially clear?

How long does it take for a cheque to officially clear. I have cashed a cheque that came form Ulster Bank and I was just wondering how long it would take to clear officially between the two banks.

I have heard stories of the cheque going through to peoples accounts only for the money to be taken back out at a later date?
