I always thought that all Sram and Shimano parts were fully compatible, maybe I was wrong.

Anyway I have a TT bike with Sram 500 shifters and Apex components, I brought it to the LBS to change out the front and rear derailleur for ultegra ones that I had. He done the front no problem but told me the rear ultegra derailleur wasn't compatible/ doesn't work with the TT shifters, I have to take him at his word but does this seem strange?

SRAM gears use a 1:1 pull ratio, shimano is 2:1 I think.
This means that the levers index different amount of cable per click, and that each shifter moves a different amount around its pivot points.

Nope the pull on the levers to the derailleur is different. I can't remember the ratios but basically you can switch cassette but derailleurs and shifters must be the same brand.

Well that explains that then, thanks for the input guys. Only one thing to do now, buy a new bike!
