I think so. It's hard for straight women to talk about their sexuality without being labelled as sluts or feminazis. Gay women get a worse deal again and are generally stereotyped as hot bisexuals or man-hating dykes, so it's easy to see why they'd want to keep a lower profile.

Ya the more i think of it you always hear of a large gay community for men but gay women dont seem to have as much of a scene or community in ireland anyway, i really cant say i know or can think of one lesbian in my area compared to at least 7+gay men.

My sister. Everyone was grand with it in my immediate family. One of those, sure we all knew already, you should have said it sooner kind of things.

Kind of a non issue these days thankfully.

I actually can't think of of family members who are gay, even distant family. I have a few gay friends though. Id imagine everyone does.

Possibly, give me a shout if you need a control group to continue the experiment.

In the name of science of course.

I'd say I have more gay friends than straight.

Over the Christmas I went to my parent's local, bumped into the same group of lads I would have known for about 15 years, maybe longer. One of the guys in the group is still not out to the other lads, despite many of the girls knowing and there have being whisperings of it for years. But I understand why now.
The use of the word "f****t" and "queer" that night directed at anyone and everyone. "Look at this f****t coming in with his pink shirt" "are those queers out in the smoking area riding each other?"..

I don't understand how their girlfriends could put up with such uneducated, uncultured cretins. But sure two pints was all I could stomach to stick around for, so I never got to ask them.

Going by social networks or other websites you'd think Ireland is a pretty liberal country but in reality I don't think this is true. Especially in rural areas. Maybe in a generation or two it will change to not to be as a conservative country, but at the moment (in general) I think Irish people struggle to accept things that aren't normal. I think most people will say yeah it's cool or they don't mind if you're gay but they I think overall, especially with over 30s most still feel uncomfortable about the issue.

A lad I know came out as gay and had a night of AIDS and Hepatitis jokes. He still hangs out with us because he's got a sense of humour.

    Does gay for pay count?.

Nobody I went to school or college with was gay or have come out afaik. In fact one guy in college who many presumed was gay has a long term girlfriend now. Nobody in my family or neighbourhood is gay. Nobody I work with is gay that I know of. I have always thought it strange I don't know any gay people. Not sure if that's just the way if is or if there are people who just aren't out or what.

Several students in the school in which I teach are gay though.

From the pub talk tonight I don't think you'd want to be gay where I come from. I've learned that many people will pretend to be all happy and forward thinking but when behind closed doors they'll speak free thoughts. There's a certain type of male who'll never accept other males of that sexual preference.

the kind who stare and judge, but would never say anything to your face

i don't think even gay people believe that stuff about 10%+ of the population bring gay.

It's just a way to reassure those who might have fears about coming out that its not unusual, and not such a big deal

It's disgusting that you'd think an ordinary, decent man a hipster. Shame on you!

I've known plenty of gay people throughout my life, none are close friends though.

Well I'm sure the use of such terms by close male friends wouldn't be an encouraging atmosphere for the chap I mentioned to come out to.

Some gay people may laugh off jokes like the ones you mentioned, in fact many I know would make such jokes themselves. Some I know would bristle at the mention of derogatory terms for gay people, mainly because it harks back to the same schoolyard bullying they experienced. And no, I'm not saying we should all be PC all of the time.

However, I want to make it clear that in the situation I mentioned, the terms were used in a negative manner about straight guys as an insult. It can't be easy as a gay guy in the closet worried about coming out, to hear his friends talking like that every single weekend. He's pushing 30 now, and I'd say he'll never come out unless he moves to a bigger town/city! Pretty sad.

I didn't mean that I think gay people are hipsters. It's just that I didn't think that this one friend of mine who, since starting college has come out, was gay. He had more girlfriends than me in secondary school, but towards the last few years of school he became really 'hipster'. Since he has come out however, he has become the most flamboyant person out there. It's like he took his hipster-ness and multiplied it by a thousand.
