internal wall cracks on 7 yr old house

Hi,

Im worried about some cracks that appeared on my bedroom wall.it started from the top corner off the window up the wall on the right side but ive now noticed another on the same window to the left! Im worried because there is also a crack on the outside off this window and has been there around 5 yrs now which we thought was just a settling crack! Ive checked another room and there is a small crack on one side of the window and this room backs onto the same exterior wall.

Is this something to worry about or get looked at?id really appreciate your advice on this!

I'd certainly get it looked at if the cracks are outside too.

You don't want to hear the word subsidence but it is a possibility.

Leaking drains could have caused the house to move on the foundations.

(worst case scenario)

It could also just be normal movement. You should mark the cracks with a pencil and see if they are getting bigger over a period of a few weeks/months.

In the meantime might be an idea to have a good look around the house externally and footpaths to see if there are anymore cracks.

It looks like the lintel has shrunk over time to cause this cracking.
It does not look like subsidence.
Draw a diagonal pencil line across the crack and observe it over the course of the year - I think you will find this re assuring.

Thank you for your comments it does give me some reassurance.i did forget to mention there is a crack across the pavement outside.the house is built on pure marsh land and garden has no drainage really,would this affect the pavement and cause it to crack?
