Anyone watching/watched The Taste? I love Anthony Bourdain so much I'm genuinely afraid I'd Misery him if I was ever to meet him. Am watching on 4OD cos it clashed with Stargazing last night

It looks as if the humble slow cooker is getting "there's an app for that" treatment, as Crock-Pot has teamed up with Belkin to make a "smart" slow cooker...

    http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/5/5271792/belkin-wemo-smart-slow-cooker

Looks good, but having thought about it, I think an electric timer - like the ones for heaters would do the job ;)

One of these does the job perfectly for me :);):)

That's exactly what I was talking about, but couldn't figure out how to embed the image :o

My husband is starting a low-FODMAP diet on Monday (doctor's orders). My recipes are gonna need some tweaking, practically everything I cook has onions and/or garlic!

While I'm usually not that into TV cooking competition shows like Masterchef etc, I quite enjoyed The Taste. Loved the choice of judges, I'm a big fan of Nigella and Anthony Bourdain!

I was in Chapters on Parnell St in Dublin at lunchtime, they have some lovely cookery books going for a song! I got the Women's Institute 650 Recipes book and one called Comfort Food, both €1.99.

I hate January. Am walking by Chapters on my way home but €1.99 is an immense sum of money until I get paid in 3 smelly weeks :(

My mom got me a fabulous bakery book for €4 in a charity shop. Can't remember the name of it but you name it, it'll have the recipe. It's super retro and as far as I can see, barely used. It's one of the best things I got for Christmas!

    Can you guys help me?

Need to make (a relatively cheap) meal for someone I'm trying to impress (:D) problem is it'll have to be something that doesn't require the oven or microwave, as ill be in my house share (I live with 4 boys) and the oven is a complete health hazzard. So, to avoid chronic food poisoning it'll be as well to stick to just hob cooking. :( I want to stay away from the boring standard bolognaise too

    How about a risotto?

Hi everyone, I browse here but haven't really posted. I'm like cooking but I'm dreadful at making a weekly plan where ingredients line up without waste. We are trying to save for a mortgage and I'm thinking of starting a thread with the offers running in aldi/lidl and looking for healthy, cheap recipes for the uncoordinated cook.

Would that be ok? It's not necessarily cheap meals I'm looking for (I have read the sticky), it's help with a weekly plan using specific ingredients if you get me!

Hi there & welcome. This thread is for general chat. But if you want info specifically on meal planning check out this thread...
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=77370643

There are others on similar topics out there, so maybe a quick go of the search function will throw something else up.

Thanks! That's a great place to start. I knew this was for chat so figured I'd ask before starting a thread.

It's almost what I mean. I find dishes I like and cook them but often there are ingredients that may not be in other dishes or are based around the wrong veg or I don't have anything to use the remains in. I think I need to out a but more thought into exactly like neuro praxis and possibly have gotten more than 4 hours sleep before deciding!

Someone on here (sorry can't remember who!) posted about a site that is good for putting in ingredients and finding recipes for them. www.supercook.com

I have found it handy in the last few days for looking up ideas for basic ingredients that I already have in the house (January austerity and all that).

Don't the Aldi and Lidl flyers still have recipes in them? That would help you.

I second the risotto. I made this recently and it was insanely good. Takes time at the hob stirring but i actually found it quite relaxing. This is the recipe I used: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/reallyeasymushroomri_70240

    Lexie

Elizabeth David's 'La daube de boeuf Provencale' is a magnificent recipe. It is right at the bottom of this page, and the orange peel is the magic ingredient.

I served it with lots of fluffy mashed potato and it was really good.

A mate of mine here in Switz who is a chef is planning on making haggis. He's found a butcher who can get him all the meaty bits & pieces, but he's still struggling on getting a handle on the spice mix for it. If we have any Scottish posters who could advise - I'd be happy to pass the info on.

Lardons, garlic, shallots and mushrooms frying away right now. I would happily live in just the kitchen if it always smelled like this.

I've been thinking about this for a while and the nasty comments in the "here's what I had for dinner" thread brought it to mind again.

Would anybody be interested in a "Critique my dinner" thread?
A thread where people invite others to give their honest opinions on the posted food. It could be helpful suggestions on possible improvements or just "I hate x" comments. There will always be trolls but I think it could be an interesting discussion thread.

    What do people think?

Don't think it's necessary to create such thread. Individual posters in HWIHFD can probably just ask for honest opinions after posting.
I also think that it's generally ok to criticise, but there's no need to be nasty or cruel about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,858 ✭✭✭✭The Hill Billy

It would be kind of difficult really. For a start - all you have to go on are pics &/or the poster's description. Now, if a poster had an excellent vocabulary & command of language & was also a good photographer - they'd probably get more positive critiques than an equally good cook who didn't take pics or describe their food very well.

The proof of the pudding & the best way to critique a dish is obviously smell & taste. I know the Dev team a busy keeping the site going as it is, so this will probably go to the bottom of the site development wish-list. :)

And then there are the trolls, not to mention bickering over matters of personal taste, hurt feelings, etc, etc.

BTW - These are my personal thoughts, not mod comments.

It shouldn't require any extra work - it would just be another thread.

There would be no place for hurt feeling in this thread - if you post your meal you take what ever is dished out!

I don't think that's very fair. I enjoy this thread, I love cooking, but I'm not very good or experienced. Unless the pic thread is only for experienced posters. Like I could make a dinner that I'd be so so proud of but to most of ye it could look like a dogs dinner. I think too much Negetive criticism would just reinforce "I can't cook" rather than encourage, and not everyone would want criticism anyway, I know any pic I'd post in there personally would be "look what my danger-in-the-kitchen dumbass just did!"
