that volvo is typical of ireland "top spec" = has leather , that car is missing many many options, its paddy spec with a leather interior.

If your used to a Corolla or Avensis with 4 walls, a stereo couple of electric windows and a few airbags.

Leather seems like top of the range.

Remember seen someone advertising a 1.6 Renault Laguna as top of the range.

Like for godsake - its the smallest engine in the range :mad:

Would need the top engine (V6???) to be top of the range in my book - but most Irish people haven't really experience a top of the range car - as in REALLY top of the range.

Isnt the 2.2 an opel diesel engine with a few izuzu bits around the edges? Wasnt that the engine in the old omega? Could be wrong here though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,894 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Yeah I'd heard the 2.2 isn't good, very noisy and smokey but good on power and economy.
I like the idea of a Saab but the reviews are not the best regarding the 9-3 and 9-5. Pity.

From what I see it's missing the traction control button and xenons.
The seller does mention multifunctional steering wheel, I don't see anything on it that looks multifunctional.
It turns the car AND sounds the horn AND deploys an Airbag when you crash.:D

    This too shall pass.

:D You also forgot to add that if it's a nice powerful car the steering wheel lets you grip it AND make tiger sounds :)

What's not good about the 9-5 petrol? The main issue is the sludge, but later unaffected models (from '04) are well within budget now. And for the older models, if you know what to look out for, you'll probably avoid the issue. Even without preventative maintenance. I did.

The 9-5 sure ain't no BMW, but it is a well made, safe, well-specced, comfortable place to be and excellent value for money as a bangernomics proposition in this country

Any advice on buying a cheap 7 seater would stretch to 3k but basically plan to drive a older 7 seater for a few years. Last time bought an imported ipsum and drove for 7 years for 5k, but think I would do better by spending less. Preferably would be an auto <2l and needs to have 7 seats with 7 3 point belts. My gut is to go for a Verso but anyone got other opinions? anything they think would be good. Car is for missus and she does very few miles/year. Any help suggestions greatly appreciated. Hope this post is allowed in this forum as I know a lot of you know you bangers!

    Few miles = petrol

How about a Mercedes E200 auto 7-seater or Volvo V70 auto 7-seater? Cheap to insure, both 2l, so reasonable to tax

Nicer cars than full size MPVs and much better than those compromised compact MPVs that can barely carry the weekly shopping once all seats are occupied :D

I'm not after a petrol, just the diesel.
On carsurvey.org I see many comments of a negative nature (mainly the 2.2) and it mentions quite often that the dash buttons peel away far too easily so you are left with a horrible white/black scenario.
They also mention that the stereo is the worst one ever made.
Some say inserting new speakers cures the problem but others mention a new amp is needed.
I'm more keen on the 9-3 personally and I'd agree with you that they are excellent value for money and I've always toyed with the idea of a Saab so maybe I'll find one in good knick.

This one for example is making me peckish :)

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/saab-95-diesel-1-9-tid/6155081

Has mostly everything I'd like to have in a car :) and she's the Vector 150bhp one so a good pick of the bunch I'd say

How did you fix it? With the 2 rear seats down I could sleep in the boot of our grand scenic.

have you considered a '90-'98 mitsubishi chariot/spacewagon? the mother had one a while back fully specced, 2L turbodiesel 4x4 the diesel engine shared the same block with the evo but had a SOHC setup rather than the evo's DOHC, I loved it :)

I cant find one with an auto gearbox
but they are out there and its something like this:
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/6230325

A chariot would be better specced and i have seen examples go for €3000
my mother has ideal bangernomical sense where she managed to find a fairly mint chariot for €850 ;)

Really annoying they didn't do the older cars tax on em missions too, there's a right 2 their system, the 5 series diesel has super low em missions but old 2.5l d is insane to tax compared to the same model a year or 2 younger.

I wouldnt go near a merc within the last 7 years either.
mercedes-benz up to the early '90's were a solid reliable, well engineered machine, but are now a mere shadow of their former selfs and have lost out significantly since to BMW and even audi in recent years

Big time. Not sure what they are playing at.

Not so sure that Audi quality matches the price tag, but the BMW's IV had have felt bomb proof.

    what can ya do?
The whole annual car tax system is like a comedian in this country with the recent off the road tax decleration getting a standing novation!
    but what ya gonna do?

I mean audi in terms of its quattro cars, second to none 4wd systems in my opinion.
And the audi have a right to their price tag beating the le mans over and over, not to mention they drastically changed the face of rallying with their original 80's quattro, god I love them old audis!!!
And in my opinion Audi today have a better build quality then mercedes but BMW are top dog :)

BMWs give their far share of problems. Nice cars granted but well built, I beg to differ.

I dont think anyone who has had to pay thousands to put their car right after the timing chain snaps or over a grand when their turbo goes when there is under 100K on the car will think much of BMW build quality.

That said they are nice to drive when they are in good order.

just comparing in respect of what BMW and audi are compared to mercedes-benz.

many more modern mercedes iv heard of about timing chains failing compared to either BMW or audi.

compared to other manufactures even to certain south korean built yokes.
mercedes, audi, bmw are way down the list in terms of reliability along with the usual countless electrical gremlins they inevitably devolop

You realise that the BMW timing chains fail so often that watchdog in the UK did a program about it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 150 ✭✭DeFinch89

feck i just realised iv been awake over 3 hours now lol, goodnight fellow bangernomic heads!!

ouch honestly didnt know BMW timing chains failed so much it warranted a dedicated tv program? is just all of a sudden failure or a tell tale signs leading up to the inevitable kind of failure?

Yep platform is a late 80s Vectra A. Like I said it's not a keen drivers car. If you want a drivers car, get a BMW ;)

Apart from that, there's very little not to recommend one.
