But what happens when you need to go from 120kmh up to 135? Throw away the stopwatch and breakout the calendar? :p

You could say that about any other 1.4 hatchback. Those Scenics are "less slow" than Golf/Focus 1.4, and weight only ~100-150 kg more. I know because i drive one every day. Those Renault engines are as "powerful" as 1.4 could go in its days. Surely noone expects it to be fast -and for the purpose of the thread the car is fine.
The gearbox is terrible - i agree with that:mad:

I think I know which one hes on about.... It needs a bit of work, which the bulk of may be done by the time of sale :p

That is certainly true. Timing belt aint the only thing that can go wrong on them though....wishbones, drop links, anything electrical, the list goes on....of course Id like one though:rolleyes:
The lack of momos finest cow is a shame

Those things aren't terminal though;). It's no more lightly to go wrong (in terms of the belt breaking or another mechanical failure) than any other bangernomics car with no history.

The thought that the belt might break at any time soon can't be the nicest feeling in the world though. Especially if on the motorway or stuck in city traffic. :)

I've been doing it for almost the last 2 years! I have just been going on the previous owners word that it was done. The worst thing that'll happen is that it'll stop and you'll be pushing it to the side of the road :pac:

it's a brilliant candidate for timing belt roulette

I don't mind playing timing belt roulette, but not with an Alfa TS. That would be the same as Russian roulette with a revolver with only one empty chamber :pac:

I dont know about saying as slow as any other 1.4 hatchback, I find the '95-'00 almera 1.4's quite nippy when properly driven.
The golf MK.IV 1.4 is slow because of quite a heavy shell.
The focus 1.4 are dirt slow for reasons i dont want to know but the focus 1.6 is quick.
The impreza 1.6 (classic shape at least) is **** slow.
and then ya have the corolla 1.3 which were a very nippy car too.

But agreed ya dont expect the scenic 1.4 to be lightning fast and cheaper tax, running costs, cheaper insurance, just about sufficient space for a family of 5 and a full load of shopping in the boot is all one needs for a reasonably sized people carrier in an easy to park compact body.
makes more sense a mother drives a renault scenic 1.4, then them annoying yummy mummy's that just have to have a big pointless SUV's and waiting 10mins in a car park for them to make an otherwise simple 3 point turn, 4 tops in a scenic.

I counted how many times it took a blonde one to eventually pull off out of golden island, athlone in her '08 range rover: 14 point turn... 14!!!

I suppose for family practicality and engine efficiency ya cant go far wrong with a renault scenic 1.4

    A bangernomical 4x4 this time:
If one happens to be between vans this imo would make a really good temporary substitute.
Taxed and tested (DOE'd) for long enough.
clean enough shape too and a genuinely brilliant off-road chassis and a decent turbodiesel lump.

and personally i just love the look of these yokes, never had one but would love a day of off-roading in one of these beasts, or even to have one as a prop or part of an airsoft game (another hobby im into aside from cars). :)

I can't really tell but it looks like that Alfa has heated seats.
As mentioned, pity it isn't a v6 but still had 155bhp back in the day :)

must be the only almost full spec e class in the country. factory nav on a year 2000 irish car, probably belonged to an embassy or somesuch.

00-D-56000, nice number plate as well.
Wonder if I can get the wife knocked up quick enough to justify spending another 1.5k :D
Would I also be right in thinking that those screens can also be tuned for tv?

should have analog tv tuner fitted (which obviously wont work anymore. Buy a saorview tuner that has a built in rf modulator and you could splice it into the tv input to use it though.

    No PDC?

€1,809 tax in a not very frugal, not very powerful 14 year old diesel car has limited appeal though apart from taxis. Are cars that old still allowed?

pdc would probably one of the easier and cheaper retrofits on that car, although pdc and heated seats are all i can think its missing, which are quite easy to fit if they were wanted.

if you wanted something comfy to tow a caravan or smaller boat id say it would fit the bill for fcuk all cash, its certainly comfy. Personally id rather a V8 petrol model if im shelling out 1809 a year but its still nice.

Now we're talking. Might as well get a 5l V8 petrol S-class, Lexus LS or 7-series then or something else with a bit of proper poke / refinement :)

    Dont they have about 200bhp?
Of course it wouldn't have that anymore but a nice tune up should see it pulling out some nice figures.
Very difficult also to compare a 3.2 diesel Merc to an S500 or Lexus.
Personally (not attacking anyones opinion here btw) I'd rather spend that 1500e on a quality looking diesel Merc and feck around Europe with it.

Some good ones there ND, the Volvo was looking great till that dirty knock showed up.
Rover is good value with heated seats as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,247 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

that volvo is typical of ireland "top spec" = has leather , that car is missing many many options, its paddy spec with a leather interior.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,894 ✭✭✭✭bear1

From what I see it's missing the traction control button and xenons.
The seller does mention multifunctional steering wheel, I don't see anything on it that looks multifunctional.

It looks to be the camera, the lights seem to line up perfectly with the outline of the boot/wing.
Aren't these the "worse" 2.2 Tid engine though?

you know its the one with the 2.2 engine that like to sh!t themselves, the 1.9 is the only choice, if you'd have to have one of these.

That was in relation to a saab 9 -5
