Really? I think lads look too much into little things like that. Wouldn't bother me one bit

That'd be the conflict Tim but if the man thinks so little of Jersey that he's asking Jerseys oul fella to basically "send the young lad over" I'd let him go hang until he apologised and asked me nicely himself. That sort of sh1t used to drive me nad when I was yoinger.

Agreed it doesn't sound like the most positive start, if all yourman wants jersey for is to push heifers into the robot 1st few wks (and I can guarantee there will be plenty of that!), then I'd tell him where to go, but anyways if I was jersey meeting yourman for the 1st time, I'd have plenty of questions to suss out how much stockman he is, how much of an handle does he have on grass management, how is he setup for calving etc etc, and then I'd be offering myown advice (if any!) as the experience dairyfarmer, if it goes any further than that, then it would have to be worth my while.

I agree, he asked and did'nt order anyone about. He must appreciate jerseys skills if askin for help with heifers calving. One good turn.

That's the way its done around here any. The would lad gave him my number. As long as isn't calling me every day or at 3 in the morning I don't mind.
All I'll say is he hasn't a notion about cows and is getting a student in the spring break to help

I'd be inclined to tell him to go f' himself if I was you, ringing your oul fella to ask if you would do something:rolleyes:. Ringing your oul fella to get your number fair enough beyond that it has nothing to do with your father. At absolute minimum you want him to call around and apologise and ask you in person.

Often older farmers will want to approach someone there own age, he may also feel uncomfortable asking Jersey as he may feel that JE know a way more than him. He also wants his business kept private and maybe his approach to JE father will ensure that.

Lastly my eldest gives a lad a hand now and again he usually enquires through me as he knows that he is going to College, has exams, works and that I require him as well. So maybe the same he is afraid that JE father requires him nearly fulltime.

And he'll be a great fellow until one goes wrong......my advice would be to tell the neighbour to get a vet, he won't be long learning when he pays a few bills

    Good advice,

I used to help a lad not far from here he bought in heifers and got them in calf scanned them and when had dates he asked to give a hand. All was fine for the first 3. He rang one day for me to go over. When I got there I knew the heifer was in trouble and advised him to get the vet that I thought there was something wrong. He said he would watch her for a while first. He lost both as the calf was dead in her and he left her too long.

Never minded losing a calf if I done my best, but helping someone else and being told you went too early/left it too long.......never again.
I'll help alright but I won't make decisions

I went done lastnight for a gawk and the houses seemed fairly intact but there could be some flooding inside too. The prom is wrecked though.

Lovely day of clipping cows tails and pulling cleeveens off their udders in the shed today. Fairly sure one of our cows is going to have twins shortly too. Looking a bit slung and bare down her back, very tight behind the shoulder too. Or else it'll be a giant blue bull.

I don't know which I'd hate less, a section or twins!

Saw that, considering how cheap grain is, and that beef is only worth 30e/ton, paying 55quid/ton would be over the odds in my view. How much of a price do you put on say chopped and washed beet however? You don't know if that price is delivered do you? And how many tons in an artic? If a load was dropped in my pit say the once a week I needed one, and it would last fine for that period, then it could be worth it for the convince, however getting a load of nuts blown into the loaf and feeding in the parlour aint hard work for me either ha!

Theres maize in it aswell though.
I was thinking it might be better instead of buying silage. I'd use over a T a day I'd say from mid Feb. So it would see me out for what silage I'd need. 24t in an artic I think

If I was short of feed I'd be buying that .should be a top quality feed.50 50 beet maize mix delievered to yout yard for 55 a tonne sounds ok to me anyway.theres a lot of work in beet between harvesting it,washing it,chopping it then mixing it with maize and then to deliever it.
