Got two of those drives in Argos, €125 each. And at the time a free USB flash drive thrown in! As noted above they have been at that price for near a year or so at this stage. A good drive I might add!

Anyone try pulling the bare drive out? Some of these might not have normal sata connections internally.

Can't really see them having IDE connections (esp with the USB3), and any one of these that I've opened have had SATA.

Cool they had started removing standard sata connectors for a while.

well, some of the USB3 drives are not sata, they have a native USB connector only

I have on a few on these segate drives, there all normal drives on the inside normal sata just with a small pcb that does the usb --> sata conversion. Very simple all together. On another note im running 2 * 2TB drives and 2 * 3TB all seagate barracuda drives and their flawless

As some of the cheaper models once had IDE connections.

IDE is very old standard. I dunno why you brought that up.

They started removing the internal sata connector on these external drives and wiring them direct to the usb. So you couldn't pull them out of the case and use them as internal drives.

Others have said they don't seem to be doing this anymore which is good news.

Yup. When you mentioned that they may "not have normal sata connections internally", I thought you may have meant IDE.

This sounds quite odd, but luckily I never came across one (people sometimes come to me to retrieve their data).

Noob question but if I purchase the 3TB model for £82 that comes with necessary usb cable and charger? The cable they offer at the bottom of the page is simple an extension cable?

Yes it comes with the USB3.0 A to Micro B data cable - just under 1.2M for the 2TB model I have. If you're intending to use it with a number of systems or for a desktop, an extension cable is convenient and avoids the microB into the drive being too taut.

Thanks just wanted to make sure. Nothing worse than getting excited about a new purchase and having to get other bits and pieces before you can actually use it.

o.0 That's mad. Thank funk it didn't catch on!
it sucks, I almost bought a bunch of 3tb 3.5" form factor USB drives for a NAS as they were available for about 20 quid per drive cheaper than the cheapest bare drive from the same mfg at the time online.

thankfully i managed to find a teardown video on youtube and the board on the bottom where you'd find the sata connectors was gone and all it had was the USB connection soldered directly to the board, so they were useless as anything except USB.

very lucky break for me anyway., i was literally planning on pulling the trigger on them that day after mooching around looking for the cheapest drives for about a month. :)
