VW Golf weird scraping sounds

Hi all,
My 2010 golf tdi had a weird sound on coming from it, like metal rubbing/scraping off metal, loosely not hard. Seem to sound like it was coming from the left hand side and underneath the car. This happened once before about a month ago and went away when I heard a clunk sound sound coming from the same area. I know very little about cars but I did check underneath and nothing stood out to me as bring the issue.

Could be brake pad worn out?

Or a stone trapped in the caliper?

What mileage OP? It'll help indicate if the pads might be worn. You should have a look at them in any case.

I'd imagine the golf has a pad indicator light, but on older cars you'd have a metal tab that would spring from the pad once they wore to a certain level. This would cause a scraping noise, if left long enough the tab would break, no more noise till the pads were down to the metal, then lots of noise.

90k lads re mileage. Thanks for the replies so far. The noise doesn't just happen when I brake. Would brake pads make noise when not breaking? I have heard worn brake pads in other cars and it didn't sound like that, but then again I have poor knowledge of cars so maybe I am wrong. When it happened a months ago it only last for 5 minutes and then I heard the clunk. It stopped immediately then. I hadn't hear a thing since until this evening.

Would say a stone in the caliper... I have also seen on of these lately where the slider got tight and wore one pad much quicker than the rest so maybe it coud be a pad.

Thanks folks. I am due a service soon so I will tell the mechanic about it. Will report back on what they find, if they find something!
