Minced pork is on special in Lidl at €2.89 per 500g. Bought a kilo of it, mixed it with a kilo of minced beef, a wallop of parmesan and loads of black pepper and made meatballs. Will brown them tomorrow, make a sauce and then freeze them for the slow cooker. Oh I love meatballs.

Great idea - I always have the intention of being that organised but never happens!

Have lamb shanks roasting in the oven, hope they're nice I've never cooked them before. Put them on at 5 for dinner at 8, but the smell of garlic and rosemary is already making me drool

When roasting things, what is the benefit of a high sided traditional roasting tin versus a baking tray? I'm doing a roast chicken tonight and they release so many juices that I want to cook the roast potatoes and stuffing balls in a different tray, but I have only one roasting tin. I know it'll be fine either way, but I'm interested in learning what difference the tin makes!

I always roast potatoes in a low sided baking tray - they get better heat all round in my opinion.

Faith, the high sides stop the food drying out and crisping as much as it would in a low sided or flat tray. The roasties would do well in the lower sided tray but you'd have to watch the stuffing balls in case they went too dry.
Same thing applies to a low-sided frying pans and sautee pans or woks.

That makes lots of sense! Glad I went with the low sided tin for the roasties so :). I'll keep an eye on the stuffing balls, thanks DB!

Wishing you all a very happy new year.
My lovely stepdaughter is frying homemade chips and Neven Maguire's ultimate beef burger. She's very kind to offer to babysit this evening so we can go to our local joint for a bit of live music and midnight countdown later.
A nice start to a new chapter.

It's all a bit confusing ... read the Wikipedia page on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabatier. Basically pretty much anybody can make knives and call them Sabatier, it's effectively meaningless. Having said that I got a Sheffield made 'Sabatier' cleaver for Xmas made by Taylor Witness, and it's actually quite good.

The shop beside my house has Easter chocolate in it today!! What in the name of chocolate eggs is going on here? Half tempted to buy myself a packet of Egg & Spoons as well which would reflect poorly on me

Our local supermarket gets Easter eggs in every year just before Christmas - it's a tradition :)

One of my New Years resolutions is to not eat my body weight in Creme eggs so this is not helping!!

Back home today after the huge Christmas binge-fest. I am really craving salads and green things at the moment. I saw a kale salad on Oh She Glows, a vegan site, that looked really good, so may have a go at that if I can bear to go into town.

Flipping slates down all round the house, so may just have a bath and go to bed instead. :pac:

I'm making a pie. Currently I have (all chopped) a leek, half an onion, a carrot, a small spud, a stick of celery and a minced clove of garlic sweating in butter to soften a bit.

I've made my shortcrust for the sides and top (must remember to lubricate the pie dishes)

To make the "gravy" I'm going to use stock made from the turkey bones mixed up with roux.

I've some leftover ham to use up also, which will be the meat for the pie.

Egg wash to make the pies look nice.

    Should be nice!

Big night round my house. Discovered the shop beside me sells mini-roll misshapes as well as my beloved biscuit misshapes. So instead of chowing down on slightly shop soiled yellow snacks this evening I will be eating oddly shaped jaffa cake mini rolls

ALL of our bills came at the start of this month, and my OH is out of work at the moment, so it's going to be a VERY lean food month. I see a lot of stews, soups and bulk meals in my future :(.

I shall be raiding this forum for cheap food ideas!

I was just about to say "beans are your friend" but having read your reply on the disgusting food thread, maybe not :p

Haha I know! So annoying. I should really try beans again (of the non-black eyed variety). They might not be too bad. But the smell of them cooking is horrible too!
