I've been a vegetarian for twenty four years now and in that time only twice have I been served something accidentally.

    You can tell immediately.

You do not even have to taste it before your molars will that you have something out of the norm in your mouth.

I was given ham in a panini in Clonmel and prawns in a curry in San Francisco. The texture of both of those was enough to set my alarm bells ringing without swallowing.
Both were hidden visually but there is no disguising the taste and texture of meat although they have tried to replicate it.

Sent both meals back, apologies accepted, new dishes recieved and chow down, no harm done.

However, I was in a Chinese vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco and the Singapore rice with the vege ham was that 'lifelike' I had to check a couple of times to reassure myself that it wasn't real. God bless MSGs.

Greedy chicken eating corpse crunching cow will be coining it in now. Would she sue if the the local Ye Olde Tea Shoppe served here that ?

Ok, the one excuse for her reacting so badly to having eaten meat would be that she is in fact Hindu.
So her being vegetarian isn't just a choice of diet, it's a matter of faith.

That doesn't mean I condone it, going to the paper about it and after the manager apologised and she had been offered compensation, that's just attention-whoring.
But I can kind of sympathise with her feeling extremely upset and trying to make herself sick.

That said, as a vegetarian myself I can't understand how she would trust the restaurant so blindly, and how she would not have noticed that what she was eating wasn't Halloumi. That stuff has a rather unmistakable texture after all.

So she ate most of a chicken pita without noticing the wrong taste, texture and most importantly, look of the main ingredient...... yeah right.....

What's the point of being a vegetarian and eating in Nando's? Surely you shouldn't support a massive chicken restaurant chain in anyway if you're so staunch in your believes

This is the first thing I thought

I've never been to Nando's so hope someone else can clear this up for me but if they grill all the chicken there, wouldn't it be warm in the pitta? or do they let it go cold before using it?

Maybe her total over-reaction is because she actually like the chicken and now feels guilty.

I'd never choose to eat in Nando's myself but if you're the only vegetarian in a group sometimes you have to compromise. I've only been to Nando's once, where I had the bean burger (don't, it was awful). I washed it down with plenty of Superbock though so the evening wasn't a complete waste.

What this woman did was bad form, but it's a Daily Mail story after all. Stories like this keep them in business.

    ^ I'm also a vegetarian. If you read the article it says she's a "Nando's Fan"...ha!

    But yeah, Daily Mail..

You can not really know that one way or the other. It could be a personal choice that her family made. Some Hindus eat meat and others do not.

Aye, I was thinking the same thing. Some Hindus don't eat any meat at all (this includes eggs) but many Hindus will just avoid eating red meat, so they are free to enjoy chicken, fish and eggs. In the part of India where I lived, the latter was more common and there was chicken on all the local menus.

Yeah, but halloumi is also warm.

Anyway, she's an idiot. If she was that bothered about animal welfare, she wouldn't go anywhere near Nando's.

Look it, I can imagine that it would be upsetting for a vegetarian to be accidentally served meat for obvious reasons , but this woman is after taking it way too far, you'd swear someone was after raping her the way she is going on about it it it's way over dramatic. One of the posters here's said that their veggie friend was served meat, actually got sick, this one could even get sick when she tired and the friend didn't kick up a fuss like this.

The woman in the article is without question a tard, and most likely looking for compensation and needs a kick in the arse, however, why must every single time the Daily Mail is linked to, as a source for an article in an OP, must someone come along and show boorish disdain as if they made up the story?
Well vegetarians ARE one of its enemy groups so a story about an extremely neurotic vegetarian = win-win.

    Since when?

Anytime that I see an article about the vegan diet, be the focus on the diet itself or on a celeb that is following it, they have never included dispairging remarks about or suggested that the diet, or the person following it, where foolish. In fact, I must have seen five dozen or so articles, this year alone, on the DM site that made me think about going vegan.

Here are just one dozen, from this year:

They even had an article on how to have a Vegan Thanksgiving / Christmas this year:

Seriousily, can we have it added to the charter that slagging off the DM. just for the sake of it, is at least an infractionable offence.

I had never heard of halloumi before today so didn't know that. I just don't understand how someone can eat nearly a whole sandwich before noticing it wasn't what they ordered. Does halloumi taste like chicken? Have the same texture? People said she put a sauce on it so probably didn't notice it straight away but that would mean she had to look at the sandwich and I know she was chatting to her friend but even subconsciously I look at the food I am eating and would notice if something was amiss. The only time I really wouldn't notice was if I was drunk, which I'm assuming she wasn't.

Halloumi is nearly rubbery, so I suppose it could be compared to very bad chicken. But it has a strong cheese flavour which I couldn't imagine a bit of peri peri sauce killing.

It isn't just for the sake of it though - well not in my case anyway. I know it's the type of thing that seems like a bandwagon, but with good cause.
It may champion vegan/vegetarian diets in the context of "A-listers" and "celebs" and diet tips for women (most of the links you posted are from the entertainment or Femail sections) but people who are vegetarian/vegan for ideological reasons would be very much at odds with its agenda.

Same as some Muslims will drink alcohol, and some Catholics will eat meat of Fridays.

That doesn't change the fact that not doing these things are a matter of religious faith for some people

One of the main reasons Hindus do not eat meat is the Karmic Consequence.
All of our actions, including our choice of food, have Karmic consequences. By involving oneself in the cycle of inflicting injury, pain and death, even indirectly by eating other creatures, one must in the future experience in equal measure the suffering caused.
    http://www.flex.com/~jai/articles/hinmeat.html

This absolute idiot feels that not consuming meat is good karma, but that spending her money in a fast food chain that inflicts injury, pain and death for profit is perfectly OK. She is even "a fan" of Nando's. So it is OK in her belief system to have others maintain her veggie food experience at the cost of the lives of millions of chickens.

Feels to me that her concept of Hinduism is broken.

What gets me is she says crap like "there's no compensation for those 28 years" as if its all worthless now she accidentally ate half a chicken sandwich. There is no way in hell either that someone who regularly eats in places like Nando's and doesnt check their food goes 28 years without eating any meat.

I'm sure when it happened previously everyone had the good sense not to mention it to her.

I don't think halloumi tastes very 'cheesy', it's a very rubbery, salty cheese, but not sure how you could confuse it with chicken. This woman sounds like a complete idiot who would be better off cooking at home from now on.

    Halloumi tastes nothing like chicken.

Since she has publicly said that "nothing will compensate" her for those
28 years, if nandos get a good barrister they will certainly have a case for not compensating her if she sues them, no?

    Also, nandos is pure crap.

I think people are being a little insensitive towards the situation. I'm a little confused as to why she was eating in Nandos myself, but nonetheless if she has legitimate moral issues with the idea of eating another creature, I don't think we have too much leverage to mock her just because they aren't ours.

When it comes to food prep, I don't think 'basic human error' is a legitimate excuse either. We wouldn't accept 'basic human error' when it comes to most other carelessness in food preparation. If this was an allergy we were dealing with I don't think people would be so blazé about it. With that said, it isn't an allergy, and it isn't as serious as feeding somebody something they're allergic to, I'm just making the point that there is f*ckall room for human error in food prep. People can get very sick as a result.

I've no idea what the correct remedy is for such a mishap, but it definitely isn't a free meal. I know for me anyway, that if a restaurant was to make a bags of my order in a way that had legitimate consequences for me, the last thing I would want to do is have another meal there.

She hasn't been made sick though, she's fine. I don't personally think this warrants anything other than an apology. I take your point on the food prep, but if she had an issue that would genuinely have made her ill from eating the wrong kind of food she wouldn't have been so blase about eating her meal.
