Motorbike "A" License Query

    I have a full category "AM" license which I got when you could get it along with a "B" license. I've never done the motorbike theory test, only the car one, and that was well over 5 years ago. I'm over 24. Do I need to do the motorbike theory test to apply for a category "A" learner permit, or can I just apply for one on the back of my full "AM" license?

    Yes, you will need to submit a motorcycle theory test certificate when going for the provisional 'A' permit, having an 'AM' full licence doesn't help you. You could chance it of course, the people at the motor tax office sometimes don't fully understand how motorcycle licensing works and will leave you off if they're unsure. This was often the case when they did them over the counter, they now send them off to a central location for printing so there might be more formal guidelines.

    You will also need to do the IBT once you have received your permit.

    The motor tax office no longer deal with licencing. Its the NDLS who are part of the RSA and have a shop in most cities and large towns. Go to www.ndls.ie for all the info you need.
