Funnily enough they did put a time limit on it.. :)

A lot of companies run this offer, not just Harvey Norman.

Great, not doubting ye but can you prove that? and i know alot of companies do this, thats not proving anything by saying that, I was merely highlighting that they say come on in and we will try look after you and do you a good deal, everybody offers it, yet they say one thing and do another!

Good examples and you actually got me on the haggle thing but that was an EVENT, I doubt if you went in and said i am gonna haggle with you theyd reply by saying that offer is over, Haggling isnt an offer that can be over, and i would always go back and if i was buying a large item that i bought every 3 or 4 years i would haggle simple as that, Im fully aware of other price proimises i dont live under a rock, I have a Tesco club card and i get cash back on my receipt when they dont match other stores prices.

However I wouldnt use tesco as an example as these are everyday items.

That was a good link, kinda says it all, As for someone pointing out that come in and haggle was an old add campaign, I dont think theres a time limit placed on haggling? They didnt say come in and haggle with us between now and the end of the month.

Make sure you let us know if you find a cheaper price, and we will try our best to look after you.

Kinda says it all, let us know and we'll try look after you.

By the way what kind of fool wouldnt be nice when going into haggle with staff? youd want to be some kind of fool to go in screaming and shouting saying i want money off! Motivator i think you dont have a leg to stand.

I don't have a leg to stand on regarding what? You didn't get your discount, I said you didn't get your discount because they're not obliged to give you one. Your statement, along with the one that other halfwit made about depression(?), makes absolutely zero sense.

Cos your coming across passive aggressive. No i didnt get my discount in Harvey Norman that was the whole arguement about haggling, thats why i went somewhere else. They didnt want to do a deal not only offer money off but maybe throw something in, do a deal as nice as i was it wasnt happening.

I wasnt buying a CD i was buying a computer a piece of equipment that wasnt an everyday item that was high end and over 1000 euro with all the extras, I expected some sort of well we will give you this free or throw in a memory card or give you 40 euro off as your buying a monitor a computer internet security microsoft office and and and, but no they didnt want to do anything, where as PC world didnt let me walk out of the shop with my 1000 cash in my pocket, they responded to my haggling and my request for a deal and did so.

The staff in Harvey Norman were all young kids probably like yourself who werent useto hardship or recession or have grown up in the celtic tiger era.

Money was hard earned not to be squandered my whole philosophy unlike some people who get everything on credit and dont care about saving a few quid. Its nice for you that you dont have to worry about trying to save a few quid or shop around or haggle, It took me along time of going around and searching for the best deal and what shop was willing to do the best deal for me my family and the money i had to spend, and in the end i got my deal!

I was in harvey norman last week and spotted a pc screen it was 220 and i knew it was around 200 online, I tried to haggle with the sales guy he wasnt having any of it. So I walked away had a look around and before leaving decided id take the screen id rather pay 20 than wait for the online delivery, so went back and found another sales person and tried the same thing, i said iv seen it online for 200 and with very little convincing she said shed do 190. So what ever anyone says do try haggle, Its your cash your handing over, i dont know what there policy is on markup or what the sales people are allowed to take off the prices but pc world, harvey norman and sound store do allow for a few euro if your spending a few hundred.

You still didn't answer my question.

The fact that your so defensive about Apple products is a bit strange is all. It made me think your involved with selling them somehow which i wouldnt call a great job as you say.

Strange complex you have if something like someone haggling a few quid of a PC sets you off on a condescending rant. Which made me believe that you have some kind of depression / anxiety issue.

Also Sully ive never bought a TV or PC without getting at least 50 quid off it. If you think theres no haggling with items like that i think your either too young or shopping in the wrong place.

Can I just interject here for a second and ask what you mean by "too young"? There are plenty of people out there of all ages who are not confident enough to haggle in shops for fear of offending, not coming naturally etc, then I have seen a few guys barely out of their teens haggling like pros in various shops. Example, PC world I saw this young guy about 21 reaming off the pros and cons of the latest antivirus software and where he could get it cheaper etc, guy really knew his stuff and he essentially got a 2 for 1 when he left the shop. Did staff just humor him in order to get him out? Possibly. My point is that you can be young and haggle well or old and be very unsure how to do it.

The way Im reading your post is that young people are unable to haggle, is that what you mean?

Never paid full price for anything substantial in Harvey Normans. Would seem odd to me not to haggle out there. That's half the fun of it. Haggled a sofa from €1,600 to €950 and a mattress from 2k to €1200 in last few years. Does make you wonder about mark up though

Not really. Just younger people tend to accept that all prices are final more often.

No harm in saying is that the best price you can do on that? When buying something worth over a Grand. 90% of the time its not and youll get a few quid off.

99% of cases people won't budge in the corporate shops. The independent guys will try but these days a lot of pricing is to the wire anyway.

Have they done the haggle event more recently? My understanding of the article was simply that the haggling was a once off event.

Think they did it a couple of times in 09/early 10 if I remember right. Hasn't been done since.

I remember one of the lads in a HN store (not Waterford) telling me at the time that a lot of people have no idea of the difference between 'haggle' and 'barter'

Recently looking to buy tablet for my daughter and as you would I went to all local retailers. Harvey Norman were very easy to deal with and as I said to sales guy that particular tablet was available on Amazon at such a price, he said that they would match price and throw in extra warranty free of charge. Kelly and Dollard were also able to promise same deal without warranty but at good discount from in-store price. It is worth doing your online research first and then armed with some prices going and trying to cut a deal.. it is unusual these days for retailers to refuse sales unless someone is looking for ridiculous deal.

Exactly, thats what i did, took me ages to go round town and see who had the BEST OFFERS! and who could do the best deals prices etc, in the end i didnt go to Hardly Normal cos they didnt want to do any deals or bargains or anything. they wanted full price full stop no sweetners! so no thanks harvey norman i shopped around and got a good deal somewhere else spending over 1000 cash.

Yeah, or you could just earn enough money so that you wouldn't have to beg for a discount. It's a shop pal, not a soup kitchen.

Whats with the High Horse?, going by statistics most people on here agree with haggling or looking for a bargain getting a good deal etc.

All your missing motivator is BAH HUMBUG! Your talking 2008 talk, earn enough money so you can spend it? so if we have money we should spend it all? thats what got us into this whole mess! wreckless spending.

    Let them have their cake

    Bah Humbug

The vast majority of people on here agree that when your spending a significant amount of money on a purchase that isnt a regular purchase, that you should look for a good deal shop around see if you can get a bargain.

and you disagree, Im going to continue as i do because i make sure i get value for money.

By the way Stefan Idiot Jones dont forget to put a thumbs up after his post above!
