I guess it'd be too complicated for a garda station in Dublin to have a day where they swap staff with a garda station in another ciity and have the
Gardai go under covercover around these junkie hotspots whilst holding/using smartphones.

As an aside, this is the first time I've ever had any hassle from anyone in Dublin. The most interaction I'd had with the tracksuit clad clan up until now was the odd one doing the "any change bud" stuff a bit too aggressively at bus/luas stops but never felt threatened. I'm still kind of surprised it happened and it definitely makes me wonder how often the little **** are snatching phones in the city.

If it were Keano's book they'd be scraping body parts from town until next week

    He was too quick.

Nearly caught him with an all mighty kick in the hole as he was turning to run away.

The book is still in perfect nick too, so all is well that ends well.

You 100% did the right thing in my view, it seems he was squaring up to you and you stood your ground and defended yourself, its a perfectly reasonable reaction. I pose a question to you OP, if you had the little scumbag at your mercy somewhere, say tied up in some warehouse, nobody around for miles and you had whatever weapons at your disposal, would you finish the job, if nothing else just to vent whatever anger is left? Its an honest question, some victims of assault waste weeks afterwards replaying the scenario in their head...

If law enforcement and the justice system refuse to do their job and keep us safe, that's when (in some cases) vigilantism becomes somewhat acceptable.

In our "Justice" system if you stand up to these scumbags your the criminal.
Your lucky the gardas were not around they probably would of nicked you for hitting him.

If someone attempts to mug or rob you they are fair game imo.

I'm 5‘1, no way can I take on a bloke.

There's no rush to grow old though, man - enjoy your youth. Just wait until you hit your teens and it'll all come with time.

I would have just walked by and he would have decided to find someone else to try to mug tbh, but then I'm an awful rough looking cnut. I'd actually love one to try, just for the lols. Good for you for clattering the robbing git Seaneh. They need more clattering.

Ha, no, If I'd gotten hold of him I'd have called the gardai though and held him until they arrived.

The poor fella probably had a very deprived upbringing. The trauma of your assault on him will probably add to his overall sense of anguish. You should just have given your phone to someone less fortunate than yourself. Society has abandoned these poor unfortunate people and owes them a debt.

By the way, when I said "how would you react in a similar situation" I meant if it was happening to you and you were pretty sure you could take them on.

Obviously if dude was like 6'3 and well built I'd have shat my pants or did a legger or something.

Probably the same. Though even with a a similar height/build if you convey through your body language that you will gladly leave all pretenses of self preservation at the door, like any animal, theyll pick up on it and back off. Mostly... Anyway if I were you I would change your appearance a bit to play it safe. You beat one k
    /S
, they will nearly always come back with many friends. Usually because theyll greatly overexaggerate the story of what you did. And contrary to popular belief they do remember. Plus they dont have jobs or any other social responsibility to keep them occupied. Wearing different clothes goes without saying but things like loosing any facial hair if you have it, tightening a hair cut or if you have neither of either, grow the former a little and wear a cap or ordinary glasses. Of course, if you live completed outside of dublin then disregard everything youve just read :o

Yup, one day Seaneh, heading to start a new err, life outside of Dublin. About to step aboard the Luas, you can almost smell the country air, the freedom, a stash of shopping clasped in your hand - loved ones awaiting anxiously. Then bang, from nowhere, the flash of a blade, freedom ripped from your grasp - whispered like from a distant world-

"Remember me? Benny, from the Bronx."

.... or possibly not..but watch your back for a bit, scummers are like bad pennys, the fcukers keep on turning up.

with apologies to Carlitos Way for the mangling..

Ok, about 25 minutes ago, I had an altercation with a scumbag.

He was one of the shiny tracksuit clad sub cretinous types that populate the north inner city, especially along the luas line and quays.

I got to the Jervis luas stop just as the tram was pulling away. I looked at the sign for the next tram and it wasn't due for about 5 minutes so I thought "feck it, I'll walk to the four courts and get rather than waiting around".

Off I saunter fro jervis, I crossed the road at the junction with caple street and briefly contemplated popping into Cyclebike for a look around at the pretty bikes.

Cross back over a little further up the road. Had my phone in my hand and was about to put it into my pocket. little prick coming by me attempts to grab the phone out of my hand. He fails, and I shove it into my pocket.

He, in embarrassment or whatever, stops his run (he was running past me) and comes back and faces me and says "Give me the ****ing phone or I'll ****ing clock ya" or something to that effect.

Now, those of you who have met me know I am not a small man. While average height, I'm not average weight and I'm far from shy. This fellow was about my height but about 10 stone weight and as far as I could tell, had no weapon.

In my other hand at the time, in a paper easons bag was a copy of the new Alex Ferguson biography which mammy seaneh had asked me to pick up for her as a gift for one of their friends who is a man united fanatic.

As the little scummer is getting in my face I raise my hands (with the book in my right hand now) and say "not happening bud, walk on, I don't want any hassle".

Little prick gets closer and I instinctively smacker him across the bridge of the nose with the book quickly followed by another smack across the side of the head with the book and a well drawn left boot to the bollocks.

He bends over in pain and them scarpers off shouting back "you're ****ing dead, I'll get you, I'll remember you".

If he had a weapon I would have just given him the phone, no sense in taking the risk. But seeing as I thought I could atleast hold me own with him, I decided "**** this" and defended myself and my possessions as is allowed by the law.

How would you react in a similar situation?

Please tell me it was a hardback. I love a story with a happy ending at Christmas :)

This is how I would have done it:

Palm strike to the underside of his nose

Then followed by a quick ninja strike to the throat

Followed by a round house kick to his knee cap

As he falls to the ground I'd lean on his throat, the stink of my breath bringing him out of his daze.

I'd whisper quietly as I take out my phone and take a photo of his face and any ID he might have.

“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”

We'll done buddy... Nice move. Seriously though, watch yer back for a few weeks. It may have been an idle threat when he was running away, but I would keep me eyes peeled at the same time.

Meh, he could easily have hit you first. I don't see anything wrong with what you did.

Although, you should, as everybody said, be careful for the next few weeks.
