Has anyone had a chance to compare these two in terms of video/audio quality, channel switching speed/reliabiity etc.? I notice that one Irish satellite co. claim the Opticum is an upgrade? Are there any other combo receivers worth looking into (other than the Triax)?

They are all based on the same Ali chipset - ALI3602. There will be no difference, other than software written menus. The Opticums are clones of the Edisions (did they ever sort out the lack of extended programme information for those ???)

I know who the quote is attributed to in terms of upgrade claims. Perhaps they can give you and I the reasons why they are better.

The key to any product is having a say in the support end. It would seem that Ferguson do fix problems for Ireland.

I've carried out work with customers who had the opticum and it does seem like a decent box . The guys at satworld told me they favoured using it over the ferguson. Guess it really comes down to whether you can pay the extra.

They seem to allude to better reliability on their site - I wonder is that the only perceived advantage? I didn't think the Ferguson box had issues in this respect?

No more or less than any other box

My old alma s2300 combo vox is struggling a bit so thinking of changing, looking for any advice experience boardies have with the following as these seem to be the most common combo boxes amongst boardies.

    Feguson ariva 252
    Opticum x7
    Xoro 9000+

just looking for a basic combo box, not interested in in triple tuners, linux etc. Tks

The Ariva 150 is worth considering too as you don't need T2 terrestrial

Tony's right ariva 150 is fine if you don't need the T2 tuner/display/programmable remote
