RIP Peter O'Toole. A great actor.

As usual, UK media will say he was British.
He was. He was only born in Ireland, and there's even a question hanging over that. Grew up in England. Irish father all right though.
How does abusing alcohol like a moron make you a legend?
    :)
Yeh I don't have any issue with people loving to party, and love a good session myself, but this "Legend" stuff in relation to people who'd be looked-down-upon winos if they didn't have money, is so teenage.

He regarded himself as being Irish.

    Held an Irish passport.

BBC's webpage doesn't call him British in fairness. Doesn't call him Irish either, mind: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25393557

Very sad to hear, watching Lawrence of Arabia, even now, you know that you are watching an epic film, the scale, the cinematography, the legendary soundtrack but even greater than all of those glaring facets is the performance of Peter O'Toole, in his breakthrough role, he oozes charisma. His every movement and expression captives the screen, your eye cant help but be drawn to him despite the sweeping beauty of the desert landscape. imo, it remains one of the all time great leading man performances cinema has ever seen.

    RIP Peter O'Toole

BBC Radio 2 news reported President Higgins tribute.

Ireland, and the world, has lost one of the giants of film and theatre

    Those eyes indeed...

I think the legendary thing about him was that he managed to be ridiculously stylish even when drunk, unlike Reed, who would speak in tongues, or Harris, who was a bit of a crank.

he seemed like a charechter but i always thought he was very over rated as an actor , always played the shakespearean high brow roles , in fact he played that role off stage aswell

When and more importantly IF you ever grow up you might, if you are lucky, gain an appreciation of real talent and real charisma.

    RIP.

He was at our house once back in the 70's. In Connemara. I think he was there filming something... I was only a kid.

He's not. Harris, then Gambon, is your Dumbledore.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]I have no intention of uttering my last words on the stage. Room service and a couple of depraved young women will do me quite nicely for an exit. -- Peter O'Toole

:pac::pac: Ah well... no one can have it all, I guess.

There's no contradiction in being both British (or English, if you like) and Irish. BBC obituary says this:
He claimed to have two birth certificates. One stated that he was born in Ireland, one in England, but he was certainly brought up in Leeds in a Yorkshire Irish family.
