The onus is on the candidate to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements. If you don't know then you need to find out from the examining body who awarded your grades. It is not up to PAS to do this

If your using the degree and can speak English you will have to an Irish exam for PAS. If you speak Irish you will have to do an English exam for PAS.

    That's my understand of it.

I do have to laugh at people who can't answer the question but still answer. Last night someone was on here talking about the educational requirements saying to people to read the booklet that it was simple and didn't know why people could not understand it and one hour later he put up a post asking could he not apply with a LCA that he didn't know that and asked for advise... Lol

Does anyone know what that exam will be like. Is it leaving cert style all over again?

Its not up to others to determine someone's eligibility. A fetac level 5 in flower arranging may only be equal to one subject in the leaving cert. So it's up to candidates to find out from the examining body if the level of education is equivalent to the leaving cert.

It is terrible reflection on the Public Service recruitment that so many posters are confused about the application requirements. These are young men and women with a great variety of qualifications many of which would be beneficial to a police force.
Would it be so difficult for the authorities to make it a little bit more straightforward??

It is very straight forward. You must have the leaving cert with a minimum of 5pasess in subjects. 2 languages English Irish or another will suffice. If you don't have this you as a candidate are required to ensure you meet this minimum. There are far too many courses and quals out there to list them all. Also alot of candidates will be non nationals too so they will need to produce evidence that their quals meet the minimum.

I'm guessing it is t he same now and maybe the English one is for candidates who would not have english as their native tongue and are eligible as they have Spanish or French plus leaving cert equivalent English. Not 100% on this part

See that is the problem nobody knows the standard they are looking for in your second language if you don't have the correct mark in the leaving cert

If you have a leaving cert with 5 subjects two of which are languages your sorted. As I previously said u may have to enquire with the authority who granted your quals as to whether it matches the requirements. Everyone can sit the tests its not till interview stage that educational documents have to be provided. So see how far you can go and in the mean time find out your quals

Ring the state exams commission tell them your grades and what level then tell them the required level needed for entry and hopefully that solves your issue

OK, very simply the minimum educational entry requirement is leaving cert. PAS can't lower that for anyone else as the process needs to be fair and equal to all. The level will be at minimum leaving cert pass level. That is my opinion based on experience. I hope u find the answer you want and best of luck I'm going to catch some sleep.

i'd say they have lost lots of great candidates because of all this confusion. i'd imagine they have recieved loads of complaints so hopefully they do somthing about it. wether it's true or not true rejecting lca and foundation irish is a disgrace. i'd love to see how many current members have have a higher lever irish leaving cert.. no many would be my bet.

lets face it, it's a next to useless language. having it as a requirement makes no sense atall..

I think its quite easy to understand. Its in black and white. Maybe some of you shouldn't be applying for this if you can work out a simple document!
You need 5 subjects in the leaving cert, D3 grade at pass level minimum. You also need the languages.
I would take it from this that no, foundation level is not acceptable so why do people challenge it and play dumb? Because they are Id guess

Most will get the arrse torn out of them in interview if they make it that far anyway

Makes perfect sense. It is the first official language of the state. Regardless of how many persons actually speak it. Isn't there a statutory commitment which recognises the right of the public to conduct business with the force in either official language, Irish or English?

Here is an example from Thursdays Irish Independent:

...to comply with a statutory commitment which recognises the right of the public to conduct business with the force in either official language, English or Irish.

    Seems fairly obvious to me.

To those who wish to dwell on the 'ambiguity' of the educational requirements, I would suggest to apply anyway and if you do not meet the pre-requisite requirements you will be the second to know.

Very disappointing to hear that they are no longer accepting LCA, mostly because they've been accepting it since 1996 when the LCA course was introduced and then finally I'm old enough to join and they stop doing it

Anyhow, I don't really feel like they are discriminating. However, I do think that they should allow LCA students to be accepted this time and then make it clear that they won't be accepting LCA in the next recruitment as it is quite unfair to people who have studied or are studying in the LCA course hoping for a job with AGS and being told that it is accepted only to find out that it's not.

It used to be 'a student who receives a merit or distinction in the Leaving Cert Applied program is entitled to apply for AGS'. I got 93% overall, so a distinction and now I can't apply.

Can someone tell me the email address for queries about this?

Contact details are provided within the info booklet on publicjobs. If people actually read the booklet there wouldn't be half as many silly queries.

Thanks for the answer :) Pity about your hideous attitude though. Haven't seen much 'silly queries' on this thread to be honest. Some people can't understand certain aspects of it which is understandable.

Think it would be better if people just answered the questions instead of throwing in their snide remarks.

If you've nothing nice to say, say nothing.

Why ask others to look for answers that you can easily find yourself. And if you think my attitude is hideous wait until you put on the uniform and deal with some of the worst in society. Also their snide remarks will be far more personal too. Its a fact that everything anyone needs to know is all contained within that info book. Some people probably haven't even read it and are depending on the boards to inform them instead of educating themselves. If people are serious about the position they will devour all available info provided by the employing authority.

Its all about people answering in here and not knowing the answers. I'm told the answer to my question is simple yet not one person can tell me the answer.
