Our current reg numbers - how does it work?

    I had always thought our registration system for cars was fairly simple.

    It was the year-county-and the next number in the sequence.

    However, I bought a new car in 2010 and my reg was in the mid 2000s. That was in August 2010.

    A family member recently imported a 2010 car from NI and when it was re-registered it was around 12500.

    Now considering the fact that mine was 10-DL-2500, how could theirs be 10-DL-12500? There's no way there was 10,000 cars sold in Donegal between August 2010 --> December 2010.

    Any ideas?

    They came up with a great plan that Imports should have special numbers. There are a few threads here on it.

    Both cars were imports. And the day I was registering mine the guy went to see if there was any more waiting to be done as my reg was going to end in '99', and he said he might be able to give me a '00' instead. Surely that doesn't mean there was nearly 10,000 imported 2010 cars, does it?

    I always thought it was just that you got the next number in the line. Had always read that our system was nice and simple and you know that you had just registered the 10,000th car in your county etc. So it appears not.

    The problem was to do with retrospectively assigning numbers to previous years, wasnt it? Im guessing your car was fine because it was done "live" in 2010. The other car was registered after 2010, so they had to tack the number onto the end of the list of registrations for that year.

    It was actually an issue with the system/software, or something of the sort, where it couldn't handle as djimi has said retrospectively adding numbers to previous years for imports.

    Hence they came up with the fantastic idea of giving plates to imports from a set number. So for DL it must have been around the 12000 range. Dublin imports started getting plates with 120000.

    As this only came into play last year (afaik), any imports before this weren't affected (including my own, thank fook)

    Did they not since change/scrap this again? I thought I read something here about it or maybe I'm imagining things? :)

    I think it still applies, but only to cars of certain years, ie if someone imports a 2010 now then it will have the "import" reg no, however if someone imports a 2012 it wont (I think; I might have the years wrong).

    It only applies to imports that have a date of original registration of 2010 or older. My imported car is 2011 and I got the next available number when I registered it back in July.
