Surely the new price, VRT/VAT free, would be similar to what they'd be paying from a dealer for a 3y/o model. Maybe they're just after the optics to the general public of the 'Gardai save money on fleet' headlines - only for it to be revealed down the road that the were paying the same for a 3y/o car as they would for a more servicable new car :P:P

Its a good point - common sense would suggest that since VRT is paid to the state - and An Garda Siochana - is part of the state - that Garda cars could simply be bought at a price that excludes VRT.

However - I fear that this being Ireland - the Gardaí have to buy the cars with VRT included in the price - which then goes to Revenue.

Would love to know the actual situation though - as you say if the cars were bought new without VRT being paid - you've lost most of the saving that the 3 year old car would bring.

And not to mention of course the money spent on maintaining them

What are the chances that this tender is aimed at second-hand cars previously lent to AGS for recent VIP visits ... These high-end cars could be destined for senior members/special duties or to have in place for other visiting dignitaries. That or they're for undercover work. But I'd have thought there'd be other means for acquiring undercover vehicles.

So do you think the vehicles exist already and the tender is just to formalise their acquisition?

So the tender process will make idiots of car dealers all over the country. Not for the first time I suppose.

Someones just speculating - doesn't mean that's the way it will pan out.

Tbh - it really doesn't make sense either way

Having looked at the tender doc's they ain't after a mondeo, There's minimum power to weight ratio's and the likes listed in the tender.

Safe to say they ain't for mules

It's just speculation on my part, but that's how these things work.

Manufacturer/dealer says: remember those three large [luxury] family cars we lent you last year?

Management: You mean the three vehicles generally referred to in the industry as a ‘D’ or ‘Large Family' segment class type in a 4-door Saloon.

Manufacturer: Yes, the D, or large family, segment class. They're about 3 years old and they have less than 60,000kms on the clock.

Management: Sure I know the previous owner.

Manufacturer: These yokes are in showroom condition and conform to our specifications. You can come and have a look at them whenever you like.

Management: Nice. What are you looking for them?

Manufacturer: We'll give you them for x euros a piece.

Management: Bargain. But we've to throw an auld quick tender out there, just to keep things above board. But sure, who'll match that deal.

Manufacturer: That'll do, we can get them to you within the week. After we've valeted them, of course.

    Management: Lovely stuff.

Tender: This is a procurement for the supply up to three vehicles generally referred to in the industry as a ‘D’ or ‘Large Family” segment class type in a 4-door Saloon. The vehicles must be Pre – owned but cannot be older than 3 - 4 years, and should have less than 60,000 kms travelled before delivery. The vehicles are to be supplied in normal showroom condition to the specifications contained in this tender. Vehicles must conform to manufactures specifications Vehicles must be made available for inspection on request Delivery must be within 7 days of delivery.

    Maybe I'm just a little cynical ...

That's how government tenders worked in a non related industry I use to work in. My old company was asked to write the tender so we could win it on numerous occasions. It's very common.

And the previous time was when?

I always get great giggles from these tender discussions and the wild assumptions as to how it works :)

I highly doubt it as it that's against EU Directives in particular 18/2004

Well don't the Hyundai's look good compared with the look of those yolks. I suppose though having said that, they do remind me of those Lada cars that arrived here in the late 80's. It seemed that they had very long lives, I wonder will those Dacia's be the same?

The Lada was the 1966 Fiat 124 but modified for Russian roads, the Lada's seem to go on for ever compared with the rust plagued Fiats.

The Army had a flirtration with Romanian Aro's back in the 80's, don't see any around the country now.

    File:Romania_stamp_-_1975_-_55B_-_ARO_240.jpg

Those Dacias are sold as Nissan Terranos in India so if AGS said they were buying Nissans instead of Dacias would the reaction be as negative

Further to my Dacia Duster post, I wonder if AGS considered the Skoda Yeti as a suitable 2/4WD vehicle http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/skoda/yeti/84836/2014-skoda-yeti-4x4-review?_mout=1&utm_campaign=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter

On another topic, vehicle 'battenberg' markings, are they any more effective than reflective 'POLICE / GARDA' lettering would be on a plain white car ,they must cost a few bob compared with just a few reflective letters

    They are on the small side as a 4 x 4 - but as a standard regular patrol car - theyd have potential I think - as say a 170 tdi 4 x 4 - or even the 1.8 tsi with 4 x 4.

Boot may be a little small though - but they have a reputation for handling very well from what ive heard.

Not a bad choice I would say

Would love to spend a day in the mind of someone who takes something like a Skoda Yeti 170 tdi 4 x 4 on test.

    And then decides - I know - lets buy 1.7 Hyundai i40s:confused:

It depends how the weighting process was formulated. What weighting did cost have over other characteristics.
