There is no comparison in drinking a pint in the pub and opening a can at home, yes it costs more to go out but there is where the craic is. ;)

No way. You don't have to listen to eejits going on about soccer, and you don't have to stand out in the cold for a smoke.

Lidl in Northern Ireland were doing 660 ml bottles of still, bud, and becks for a pond a bottle. That's a bargain by any book. Home is where the heArt is. Ha.

the high tax on each pint doesnt help either.
Relative to the price pubs charge it's not high.

The fixed amount of Excise duty is about 55c a pint. Vat is 21%

On a can of el cheapo supermarket larger that means there's only about 30c left to produce the can and contents and transport and profit.

A tonne of water is 1760 pints and when making beer you use a lot more water than barley. Barley varies in price but ~ €100-150 per tonne.

Unlike cheap supermarket drink the price of a pint in a pub has nothing to do with the cost of production and very little to do with excise duty.

VAT unfortunately is a fact of life apart from essentials like food and clothes.

Here's an interesting one. The excise duty on 2.8% or below is half that on regular drinks. Find out how much cheaper a pint of Guinness Mid Strength is in you local. I'll give you a clue - it's not that much cheaper.
