Dell laptop webcam not working

I have a Dell laptop which no longer recognises its built-in webcam at all. I can't even try reinstalling the drivers as it does not show up in Device Manager; the imaging devices category is not even there. Is there anything else I should try or is this a hardware problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Any hardware switch to enable it, or Fn-keystroke? Or try a live Linux CD/USB boot

Can't find any switches or anything. I'll try making a Ubuntu live cd to see if that recognises it.

If your laptop will boot from USB, try http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ and save a CD
