It's makes the nope thread here looks like a little girls tea party. Some really strange and odd stuff on it. Some of the weirdest I've ever seen.

Go on to Reddit. Search subs and search 'SpaceDicks'.

    NSFL/NSFW

I'm actually too much of a sh1tbag to check out either :P

    reddit is better than Boards.

    You can leave now.
Get the reddit enhancement suite for firefox or chrome if using a desktop, automatically loads pics is you want and you can filter out nsfw content if necessary. You can also filter threads which contain specific phrases.

Be warned boards.ie is not popular on r/ireland!

And the point of that on reddit would be? Surely it should toggle. ;)

After finding Reddit a couple of years ago, the linear nature of threads on Boards really seems outdated. The ****ty jokes and out of context waffle that would be downvoted to oblivion on Reddit just have to be tolerated on Boards to get to the point of the discussion.

In saying that, because of the vastness of Reddit, anything that hits the front page is pretty much out of bounds for participating in the conversation on. If an Ask Reddit thread is on the front page, your answer won't be seen or responded to, so it seems a bit pointless, whereas it's easier to get involved in a Boards thread.

I think Boards should definitely consider at least experimenting with the upvote/downvote system, otherwise I'd fear it'd get overshadowed very quickly by Reddit, which is really gaining momentum with more and more people talking about it.

Just messing on it there, interesting. I mean if you filter what comes through your homepage you should steer clear of all the weird stuff. The comments seem to make it. I spent 5 minutes reading an argument over "would you rather go to prison for 20 years and be compensated 1 billion dollars after or be free but never be able to earn money ever again" Some would say I wasted those minutes.....I probably did.

Well lesson learned, just be sure to spend more time being productive on boards, like me.

I tried it once a long time ago and couldn't make heads nor tails of it.

Until I found the Gonewild page one evening and had it sussed in about 5 minutes.

Reddit's the best time-suck on the internet & the amount of incredibly educational/helpful subs is mesmerising.
The amount of times I catch myself doing this is hilarious. Every single time, "Oh, it's open again! Better get going!"

Reddit is great, but it has a terrible attention span, stories fly past and are gone a day later. Boards does a much better job as a discussion site. I check it daily though :)

Reddit is somewhat like a microcosm of the web at large. You have big popular subreddits that are linked to from everywhere, then more niche subreddits like /r/Planespotting, and then you have the stuff that nobody talks about.

They're the subreddits that are mostly analogous to the deep web, and a visit to any of them can be quickly summed up with this handy quote:
Was not expecting that to be a real thing.

I find the website unusable on a desktop, but works really well on a tablet or phone for whiling away the time on the bus or *ahem* in the pantsless sitting position. It's this which has probably contributed most to its popularity.

To a certain extent I find it a tad busy. If you want to take part in a popular thread, you have to get in early, otherwise your comment goes to the bottom, where no-one scrolls. Whereas here on boards you will always be the "newest" post and people will read and engage.

The upvote/downvote system is also fundamentally broken. The intent is that people upvote or downvote content which is relevant and insightful to the topic. In reality people upvote opinions they like or find funny and downvote opinions they don't like, regardless of whether it's a solid contribution to the topic.

I would hate boards to bring in a downvote because it would just be abused by petty people making tit-for-tat downvotes. Every site that has brought in downvoting has suffered the same problem. It's the fundamental nature of the human condition; we like to tell other people they're **** without actually having to say it to their face.

Be that as it may I still think it's a better way of giving higher quality content more prominence. On the Science related subreddits for example, humour/non-serious content isn't tolerated, which leaves little room for messing, and comprehensive and informative content will be upvoted, so that every reader of the thread will read the community endorsed answer or comment.

I pop in and out of the writing sections. They have AMAs with authors (trade or self published) and agents. Pretty helpful stuff.

Best AMA hands down was snoop though, when he asked and answered his own questions!
But yeah the AMAs are brilliant for specific stuff like that. And for general celebrities or whatever, like the Obama one was a great read

Why do a lot of the specialist/hobbyist subreddits for photo threads got "Porn" on the damn names?

Can't stand the downvote thing too. Breaks up discussion too much. If I could gag everyone I didn't want to listen to, it'd be rather quiet.

One day I'll become drunk enough, and post a load of pictures of [m]y own asshole.

Create a throwaway account and just do it. By the time I had sobered up I'd have no idea which asshole was even mine.

Reddit is my favourite site for a while now. Its like boards, but for the world. Arnie posts there regularly. Seriously good site and the up_down voting system helps you get straight to the best comments every single time.

I wonder if boards api could be changed to bring forward best comments of a thread...

Going to plug some of my favorite subreddits here. The default ones are awful (besides askreddit from time to time)

    http://www.reddit.com/r/ObscureMedia/ (Name says it all)
http://www.reddit.com/r/youtubehaiku/ (Short youtube videos, all are hilarious)
http://www.reddit.com/r/TumblrInAction/ (Mocks Tumblr social justice warriors, radical feminists etc. hilarious/depressing)

Love Reddit - especially ask reddit. It has such a huge audience and the people posting have such varied life experience to me so I genuinely have had my eyes opened a few times.

Scariest subreddit - clipclop. It was freaky. Very NSFW if you chose to google it :) Expect to see cartoon horse vaginas

I click on "all" up the top then click "view images" and spend the rest of the day closing pictures. It really bugs one of my mates when he sees me. Im doing it wrong apparently :D

    Good things about Reddit:
    • There is a subreddit for EVERYTHING. If you have an interest, it will more than likely be represented and if not, you can start your own subreddit.
    • It's great for breaking news because of its huge user base.
    • Fresh content all the time.
    • AMAs can be brilliant.
    Bad things about reddit:
    • There is a subreddit for everything. Including r/beatingwomen and r/picsofdeadkids. One of the major reddit dramas of recent times was shutting down r/jailbait.
    • The main subreddits (on the front page) are overwhelmed by karma whores. The quality of discussion can be very poor in an attempt to get karma. If you come to a popular thread a few hours late, your comment won't be seen. Whereas in Boards, even if you have to move a few pages, at least your posts will actually be displayed.
    • Very America-centric. (Understandable given the user base).
    • Occasionally, reddit will launch a man-hunt that gets really ugly. Like the time they doxed some innocent girl or hounded the family of a missing student who had committed suicide because they thought he was one of the Boston Bombers.
On a whole, I like Reddit. It's a great aggregator. But I prefer Boards to participate in discussions.

I prefer boards, there are people here whose posts I've been reading for years. People closing their accounts detracts from that, but there are still plenty of originals around and I've spotted who a few of the re-reg usernames are.

Why on earth would anyone post pictures of dead babies?

I remember years and years ago before I could even understand what the internet was, stories trickled down to myself and my friends from older siblings, older friends etc about rotten. Com. Anyway only 1 friend had the internet and one day while her parents went out we went on said site. Took all day to load and I think we only say 1 actual picture and about an 1/8 of another one (thank God it didn't load) before we freaked. Since that I have been so freaked out by the internet and the sick seedy stuff thats on it
