I'm sure like many here, I had stumbled upon this site many many times before but I've only started using it properly recently and I have to say its my new favourite website. It's definitely a bit confusing at first, but the way it works is actually brilliant. The is a "Subreddit" for any topic imaginable and anyone can start a new one. You post content that you think is worth sharing, and people vote up or down on if it's any good - so the good stuff naturally rises to the top. The same with comments, the helpful stuff comes to the top and the rubbish gets buried. It's now the 80th most popular website in the world.

It's customisable nature means you get what you want out of it . The best thing to do is register, go subscribe to a load of subreddits that are of interest to you, and start reading. Also go to "Top" and filter by week/month/year etc. Some interesting/popular subreddits worth a look are IAMA, ExplainLikeImFive, AskScience, AskReddit, Technology, Lifehacks, EarthPorn, Sex, TodayIlearned and Ireland can be good but it needs more traffic. There are hundreds more but when you subscribe your front page is customised to what you want.

This video explains it and some of its weirdness:

Anyone else use it? It's worth giving it a go, especially for any specific interests you have

Yup, but be careful! There's some very, er... strange ...subreddits on there.

In fairness there are a few very very odd forums on boards as well... It's what you make of it. If you like weird stuff, subscribe to weird subreddits - btu there are loads of normal, interesting and funny ones.

I love reddit! I always say I'll just take a little look, see if i find anything interesting and next thing I know its been four hours and I've been laughing like an idiot at all the comments

Ive been on Reddit for a couple of years. It's handy because i get a bit jaded with Boards sometimes and there's a lot more variety on Reddit. I probably spend as much time if not more on Reddit now.

The upvote/downvote system is good as well. On a thread any trolling comments can be downvoted and move down the pecking order of posts where it's less likely to be noticed whereas on Boards a troll can cause a lot of disruption to a thread because the thread is more linear.

The downside with upvoting and downvoting though is the popular opinion always rises to the top and differing opinons will get downvoted often undeservedly so. It ends up with a bit of a circlejerk hindmind approach in some threads.

I read some of the AMAs now and then. Could never really get used to the layout though, it looks too messy and unorganised for me.

30% of stories on the journal come from reddit. Usually a couple of days after.

Oh I forgot to mention - there is a brilliant Chrome extention called Hover Zoom which is handy for all the photo subreddits. It loads the photo behind the link in a preview without clicking and loading the image on a new page page. Really handy for Reddit but I actually find it invaluable for loads of other sites too. I think there are other extensions that make reddit better?

    Seriously.. they're like prize peacocks

One day I'll become drunk enough, and post a load of pictures of [m]y own asshole.

Create a throwaway account and just do it. By the time I had sobered up I'd have no idea which asshole was even mine.

Actually I wonder would boards ever evolve and take a few leaves from reddits book to make things a bit more interesting? Upvotes and downvotes perhaps?

I only started using Reddit a few months ago, although I can remember hearing about it at the time of the jailbait controversy a few years ago. There are some really great communities and a lot of rubbish too. /r/IAmA and /r/AskReddit can be very educational.

I tried it before and trying it again now but its fcukin tough to get anything other than a pain in the face trying to use it.

Get the reddit enhancement suite for firefox or chrome if using a desktop, automatically loads pics is you want and you can filter out nsfw content if necessary. You can also filter threads which contain specific phrases.

Be warned boards.ie is not popular on r/ireland!

Ok when people say "weird" regarding reddit......what do they actually mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,324 ✭✭✭BillyMitchel

Have to admit I love it. Definitely my favourite web site. Once you get used to it and get bored of WTF and gonewild etc etc there's some really good and interesting subs on it. Loving the normal AMA at the moment. Some of the comments do be hilarious.

I only lurk so no idea what way the karma system or gold works.

Anyone come across that scientist bloke Udain yet? The man is a genius. Think he even has his own sub now.

    Easily a 10/10 site.

I'd say it higher. Easily anything that's not Irish comes from reddit on the journal.

The journal just keeps going downhill.

Just messing on it there, interesting. I mean if you filter what comes through your homepage you should steer clear of all the weird stuff. The comments seem to make it. I spent 5 minutes reading an argument over "would you rather go to prison for 20 years and be compensated 1 billion dollars after or be free but never be able to earn money ever again" Some would say I wasted those minutes.....I probably did.

It's makes the nope thread here looks like a little girls tea party. Some really strange and odd stuff on it. Some of the weirdest I've ever seen.

Go on to Reddit. Search subs and search 'SpaceDicks'.

It's a fantastic site. Much better than boards imho.

In some ways it's better, but in others it is far far worse. There's a serious amount of hatred and one-upmanship between various groups of people on the site which often spills over and affects unrelated subreddits and users.

The overall structure of the site, coupled with how people use it and the number of people using it means that the vast majority of contributors never get caught up in the bull****.. but it's there and it's a massive issue which is only getting worse. It's something that a number of subreddits have had to deal with fairly drastically.. a lot have been pressured into hiding comment votes for varying amounts of time because of brigading and so on by regulars of other communities. Certain topics of discussion are banned completely from a number of places because of the same thing.

I love Reddit but as a means for discussion of certain topics I can't imagine a more poisonous and pointless place.

If you haven't already, install the reddit enhancement suite plug in, makes navigating the site 100% easier.

I've been on reddit for 5 years and made the front page twice.

I love it, but it does take a month or two to understand the humor of the site. i.e. obsession with cats, nicolas cage, hate for nickelback etc.

Somebody will post something and then it gets made fun of for weeks, but if you missed the original post you are sometime like wtf, so newcomers get scared off.

The only issue I have is that it's a big distraction from doing actual work as they don't block it anywhere I work.
