They're a bit awkward and I'd never write them myself. Could they come up in the Angewatte Gramatik section though?

Do you mean things like nicht nur...sondern auch..?
They certainly were necessary when I did the Leaving (admittedly a good while ago now). There's not that many of them that are frequently used.
