I think you might need saorview which is different.

I'm no expert ... but depending on how far away you are from the nearest saorview transmitter. you could get away with an internal aerial or you might need a roof aerial... you probably need a bit more advice

i live in kimmage south dublin so should receive fine signals.

regarding gaming...played one game of call of duty and the picture looks kinda ****e so far. i think my 5 year old philips 8404 looks far superior right now

ok so i realise now that i need some sort of saoirview aerial, right? but ithought the tv had freeview/saoirview built in? would some cheap aerial from argos work? the tv is marketed as "freeview HD" im so confused right now.

Think of the builtin freeview or saorview as the same thing as a sky box.
So you you have a sky box but for it to get sky you need a sky dish.

Well freeview is the free equivalant of sky transmitted in the uk (to receive it here you will need a dish)
Saorview is the irish stations transmitted digitally (so the irish version of freeview) and to receive the signal you need an aerial.
Now you could get away with a set of rabbit ears beside your tv, or could just be in area which doesnt recieve great signal(blocked by buildings, far from a transmitter) in which case you would need to connect your tv to an aerial on your roof.

What is meant by saorview built in is that the decoder is built into the tv, i.e you don't need a saorview set top box to decode the signal. You will however need an aerial to receive that signal.

Like the above poster said, the kind of an aerial you need completely depends on where you are. Did you ever have rabbit ears plugged into an older tv that was in the same location to pick up the old analogue rte signal? If you did and the signal was ok then thats probabaly all you'll need again. If back in the day you needed a rooftop aerial / attic aerial then you may have to go down that road again. Best thing to do would be borrow a set of rabbit ears from a friend and see if they'll work.

As regards Freeview HD, that's a term used for the British version of saorview and has no real relevance here. However as a very broad rule of thumb if a tv is certified Freeview HD then it will more than likely also be saorview compatible.

ahh i understand now guys! make perfect sence now hehe :)

i dont understand the HD part. i was awaire i could receive rte hd once i was receiving the signal. will i receive rte hd once i get a pair of rabbit ears? and yeah, my area is fine for receiving them so ill be grand. ill tyr the coat hangar trick for tonight anyways lol

edit: coat hangar worked. dont see rte HD though. ill have a check on google

Has anyone got the TV to pick up the free to air sky channels yet, without using a sky box?
    If so how?
    Thanks

@Daveyboy1977 I just disconnected the satellite cable from my Sky box and plugged it straight into tele. Then did a scan (not digital) and I got all the free stuff (BBC 1, 2, 3, ITV, Film4 etc....)

There is mention in a post in this thread where you have to change some voltage setting but I did not have to do that

If you paid by credit card you should be able to get a statement as a receipt, or if you reserved it online you could have an email that could be printed out? Honestly, I wouldnt touch Sony with a barge pole...best of luck mate, hope you get it sorted...

Yes if you have a bank statement with it on it, that should be ok.
Also if you have the original argos ticket on the box, with the Catalogue No. on it, it would help with the process.
