Where do all my socks go?

Today I woke up and to started to get dressed and I looked in my sock drawer to find I had a rainbow of coloured socks with no match for each sock.

Every match just randomly disappears, this has been happening in many different houses I have lived on a weekly basis. The match for each sock just disappears into thin air, I call this theory the quantum sock effect.

Am I the only one? Where are the socks going and why isn't there a helpline set up to deal with the trauma of having no match for a sock?

I'm wearing a black sock and a grey sock today :(

I'm work off the idea that the washing machine fairy taxes me one sock at every wash.

Probably into some kind of wormhole, well known fact that tumble dryers are connected with space and time.

My mother would only let us wear navy blue and black socks, because when the odd ones showed up, it was easy enough to match them. The dogs used to sleep in the back kitchen where the washing machine was, on inspection of the dog's bed we found he'd been stealing socks from the laundry basket and secreting them away behind his bed.

I gave up on the idea of wearing matching socks years ago.

Hence why I only have black socks in my drawer. Then the only challenge is not to be left with one trainer sock and one ankle sock.

It starts with a small hole, normally in the toe of the sock. This develops into a larger hole, eventually growing in size until there is more hole than sock. Then low and behold after more wear, the sock completely disappears.

Do you live with a woman? They are known to hide (or eat) socks.

You can never have enough socks.

I only buy the same black ones every time I need to make the purchase. No annoying matching to be done after they're dry. Laundry is a frustrating enough task already, without the added sock mystery.

I think I might be the answer to this. Or at least my washing machine is. I never seem to lose socks. I always keep the ones I remember buying in pairs until the day they age enough to be binned.

But on occasion I seem to end up with a single sock that I never recall seeing before. As such I have a corner of my sock drawer with currently about 10 un-matched socks I have no recollection of ever buying.

So if the worm-hole theory above is correct - it would seem my wasching machine is at the arse end of your worms hole.

    It's the sock fairy.

I have had a problem with this character for years. I tried to outwit it by buying only black socks. However after several washes I noticed that the socks don't fade at the same rate. Now not only do I not have an even number of socks, I don't have any pairs that are the same shade of black.

this seems to be an epidemic, if only wearing sandals were cool this wouldn't be a problem

Your problem is you didn't buy your socks from Habit-Hat

I lose quite a few socks into the bowels of the hot press. I can see them but that space is where spiders and monsters live, those socks are gone forever. Even if I rescued and washed them they'd never be the same again, more than likely traumatized by having spiders living in them.

Every 18 months or so throw out all your socks and buy 20 new pairs all the same colour for everyday wear.

The sock fairy shreds them finely and gives them to the belly button fluff fairy.

Are others living in the house. The usual is that they stick inside the washing machine while still wet and the next person might remove it and throw it in a pile where they expect you will search for it, or they wash it and it gets into their drawers never to be seen again as they just never pick it out.

I tried to buy all black socks to allievate the odd sock conundrum but when I had a close look at them I noticed they are only very very very very very very very very very very dark blue socks. Must be a special priest shop in dublin somewhere to buy black socks?

Im convinced there are invisible vaccums in the atomosphere that manage to suck them and feed them to a sock monster somewhere in a parallel universe.

I have a lot of lonely socks.

I mostly lose my left foot socks for some reason.

Last time I audited my sock draw I had 23 odd socks. I have no idea how that is even possible.

I took five minutes this morning trying to find a pair. Think it's time to get the auditors in again :(

Give me your address OP and I'll drop around with my 36 odd socks. If we combine ours, perhaps we can find some matching pairs.

You didn't being them down in pairs, or they are all down in the bottom of the machine.

Or the sock fairy has them.
