I currently drive a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI Hatchback with 164,000 miles on the clock. Never any major problems over the last 6 years but the milage is getting high and I fancy a change.

I'm not particularly famililar with cars but my preference would be to purchase a 2006 1.9TDI VW Passat with lower miles/km.

Would anybody have an idea of what money I would have to give along with my own car to acquire the passat?

You would struggle to get 3.5k - 4k for the focus id say.
A typical passat 1.9 comfortline with around 100k seem to be going around 6ish.
Then again them numbers can change significantly whether you buy/sell privately or trading with a dealer, and if a warranty is included.
