"Has anyone met a moderator in real life?"
Jeez, moderators are really treated as a big deal here. They're just ordinary people who action reported posts when they're available to do so!

I've been a moderator - people have met me. I think they'd all agree, even if they enjoyed my company, that it wasn't life-changing for them. :pac:

I don't think you bothered reading the end of my post. Try again dear?

Ah no, I'll spell it out for you. I asked do moderators like to keep their internet business private. I.e. Do they 'admit' to their friends that they have a whole other internet life going on.

Mods are pretty normal people, after you've followed a few home and gone through their bins the lure reduces somewhat.

I met sparky the admin out last week week. We got drunk together and I told him I was going to burn down boards.

The most handsome man in the world though. A sauve aura just emanates from him .

Passive-aggressive use of "dear" always means the person who's saying it is absolutely raging. :D

But some of your friends could be from the online community where you moderate, so they'd obviously know.

I hate mods...which is a shame since I'm a Mod Manager on another forum. :D

Seriously though, there are great mods, and there are terrible mods. I've seen both here. I've also met 2 of the mods from boards. 1 of them is a real nice guy to talk to, but a real Nazi as a mod. The other was a decent guy on & off boards.

how do they manage it at work, etc.

Have I ever met a mod in real life? Other than at beers I have absolutely no idea. The guy who sits beside in work could be a boards mod for all I know.

Do I tell people I am a boards mod? No, I don't see how that could ever come up in any conversation.

Just reported posts, but not all of them unless they have no co-mods, which would only be the case on an extremely quiet forum.

Ye should see the shít the admins get up to when we get together.

But what if no one reports a post? Who mods a bad post then. I never report, couldn't be arsed no matter what the post was i'd never think to report, this is a mad concept to me, posters report posts  but why? What are they getting out of it?

Annoyance by people acting the dick, spoiling a thread by being needlessly inflammatory, trying to wind others up etc. I know you're probably an "It's only the internet" kinda person (I don't mean that as a criticism) but I'd say most people aren't.
If people don't report a post I guess it slips under the radar, unless the moderator is viewing the thread and spots it of their own accord.

right, so whenever they 'step in' and tell people to cut it out or whatever they've just happened to be reading it anyway

do they've hours to be online or go by email notifications?

Jeez, this isn't a serious job we're talking about! No they don't have hours to be online by, and they can set up email notifications for themselves if they wish.

It's yonks since I did it. All it is is a look at things from the other side, not really much to it, unless a person is moderating Soccer or somewhere else mental, but they'll have a good few co-mods.

What forum did you mod and why did you step down/lose you position?

I met The Master a couple of times but it was at various beers. I'm pretty sure he was too pissed to remember me. :/
Even so, he seemed like a nice chap.

I can confirm, he is lovely.

And I can also say he always remembers, no matter how pissed he is. He isn't sure if this is a blessing or a curse though.

    as a moderator in training
I approve the message in the first post of this thread
I'm ready to replace any mod that would like to return their ban hammer to the boards toolbox and retire

I slept with a MODel once. Malaysian and her name was Dwane. A right handful this one was.

Having slept with a mod, did he/she resist the urge to tell you "you've been moderated" in the morning?

When I did hModding, the rules were like this -

Read every post of every thread.

Be active online for a minimum of twelve hours per day, whether you had a job or social life was irrelevant.

Minimum of five bans per week.

Nah seriously, mods are normal people. I've met more of them than I can count, from beers and also from just making friends with some in real life. Just because you might be strict on a forum you mod, doesn't mean that you're like that in real life. They're just people who agree to help out on a site they like.
