1983 Mk1 Golf daily driver outside my local Lidl today.

Listed on the tax book as a 51kW petrol which I reckon makes it a 1.5litre engine.

.............this car recently had serious rust repairs and a repaint carried out. I did some of the recommissioning but it hadn't its number plates on whilst I was working on it. Only when finished I realised that I actually have a picture of it from many years ago. I recall it was also on "Reeling in The Years" at some point.

The chap who did the bodywork also had an identical South African built one and it had practically zero rust issues !!

SZS - '84 (maybe early '85?) - good to see one still on the road.

I saw a 1980 Mk1 Golf on Pearse St in Dublin, this evening (sorry, no photo, I was cycling, and it was dark anyway) - Lemon Yellow, Dublin reg (nnn VZI), 5-door, a bit tatty, and running on mid-90's Passat steel rims.

My uncle drove one of these in the very early 80s. He had eight kids and I remember driving around Westmeath in the back of it with what felt like all of them...

He ran a frog farm, of all things, and that DS smelt of frogs - I kid you not! :D

Sorry people, I know this is a photo thread but can't resist this! This sounds stupid but my memory is of a couple of xk's in a loft over the premises which would explain the total loss I remember, mutual friend moved to Canada years ago so will have to ring him on Sunday to sort this out! Heading off in an other direction, I remember round that time mutual friend bought an Etype round the docks somewhere for 600 quid the same year I bought a 66 Mustang in Stillorgan for 300... Happy days! Back on track, Ivan had a good friend , P H , who looked after 'Plant and Machinery' in Ringsend, Peter had a Facel Vega in the garage for years, maybe the only one in the country, he sold it a few years ago, don't know where it went, haven't been talking to him for a good while now... Look what you started! :D

405 hp, 5,665 cc LS6 eight-cylinder engine, 4L60 four-speed automatic transmission with electronic pushbutton shifter, computer-controlled Air-Ride Technologies suspension, including independent front suspension with stainless steel A-arms and stainless steel four-bar link rear suspension, and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with four-piston Wilwood calipers. Wheelbase: 125 in.

    • All steel construction; over 5,000 build hours to complete
    • Incredible Sundown Cinnamon color-shift finish
    • Classic Lincoln-Zephyr style with modern V-8 power

This amazing, custom 1938 Zephyr Coupe took nine and a half years, and over 5,000 hours of preparation, to complete. With all-steel construction, it is based on a 1938 Lincoln Zephyr with extensive body and mechanical modifications. Body modifications include an eight-inch chopped roof, suicide doors, ’41 Lincoln chrome grilles, along with halogen ’39 Frenched headlights and taillights. All-new steel floors and a flat steel firewall were also fabricated. The exterior has been finished in a mirror-like BASF Glassurit urethane holographic paint called Sundown Cinnamon. Almost magically, it changes from purple, to magenta, to cinnamon, and then to gold and burgundy.

Beneath the hood, power is supplied by a 405 horsepower 5.7-liter LS6 V-8 engine from a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. It has been upgraded with Street & Performance chrome pulleys, an alternator, accessories, and a wiring harness. The engine is also fitted with custom-made chrome-plated upper injector covers, giving it a clean and classic look. The 2½-inch custom tube exhaust is Jet Hot-coated and fitted with performance headers that cleverly exit through a custom chrome Dagmar rear bumper. An 18-gallon polished stainless steel fuel tank has also been fitted. The transmission is a 2002 Corvette 4L60 four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and an electronic pushbutton shifter.

While the chassis has its origins in the original 1938 Lincoln Zephyr, it has been modified with independent front suspension with stainless steel A-arms. The rear suspension is a four-bar link, all stainless-steel arrangement with an aluminum driveshaft and a nine-inch Ford 3.89 gear posi-tru-trac rear end. It rides on an Air-Ride Technologies computer-controlled suspension and Boyd Coddington 17-inch chrome wheels shod with Toyo Proxes 4 tires. Bringing the Zephyr to a stop are four-wheel, cross-drilled and slotted ventilated disc brakes with four-piston Wilwood calipers.

Designed and installed by Paul Atkins Custom Interiors, of Alabama, the interior boasts a custom steel dash with six Classic Chrome gauges, a custom bezel, and a matching steering wheel. The custom-fabricated console incorporates a removable iPad. The six-speaker Alpine stereo system features focal tweeters, a mid- and sub-woofer, along with two 12-inch JL Audio woofers powered by two MMatts 6000-watt amps for incredible sound. The seat frames and custom foam cushions are by Krist Kustom, lavishly upholstered in Euro-beige leather with custom aluminum accents. Though already cool enough, the passengers are kept comfortable by a Vintage Air system.

Combing the classic Art Deco styling of the Lincoln Zephyr with the best in modern mechanicals and incredible details, this is one spectacular automobile. Most importantly, this example was fabricated using an all-steel body compared to other fiberglass examples. Countless hours and resources went into creating this superb ’38 Custom Coupe. The owner says simply, “It drives as good as it looks!” Prospective owners will no doubt agree.
