In general live albums don't do it for me but I Might Be Wrong by Radiohead is excellent and 1969 Live by The Velvet Underground is also wonderful.

Nirvana 'Unplugged in New York' is my favourite live album, I think it's the almost somber overtone of the performance that does it for me! There's definitely extra energy it's just conveyed in a subtle manner which I really enjoy.

Any artists in particular?

The Cure - Paris is a personal favourite of mine. There's quite a lot of stuff taken from the Seventeen Seconds/Faith/Pornography era which makes it something special. The album also ends with my favourite version of Close To Me.

Re: Live albums... these are mostly ones I've been playing lately.

The Fall - The Legendary Chaos Tape
Loads of Fall live albums out there but I always enjoyed this one. It was recorded between Slates and Hex... two of their best releases.
It's sloppy at times and the sound quality isn't the best but that's part of the charm... it's got kazoos too.

Built to Spill – Live
I’ve only heard one track from this, their 25 minute version of Cortez the Killer. It’s worth checking out for that. It’s Built to Spill so the rest of it is probably great too.

Dirty 3 - Live at Meredith!
Always thought these guys had something live that many of their studio records failed to capture. So I like listening to this.

Bill Callahan - Rough Travel for a Rare Thing
Great setlist - lots of songs from A River Ain't Too Much to Love and you know, it's Bill Callahan...

For post-rock stuff like Godspeed and Mogwai you could check out Explosions in the Sky, Tortoise and Yndi Halda (if you haven't already).

For stuff like MBV you could check out Swirlies, Lilys, Ride, Asobi Seksu and Drop Nineteens.

I was reading a thread somewhere else on boards where the OP mentioned that since he had gotten an iPod, he stopped buying new music and fell behind with the times. It really struck a chord with me and it's something I've noticed myself recently. My iPod is full of the stuff that was popular 10 years ago when I was a teenager- The Killers, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Damian Rice etc

The most recent album I have is the Kodaline one, everything else is pre 2010 (most are pretty 2005 haha

) When I look at the indie charts now I have no idea who most of the artists are

I don't mind spending the money on some newer music but I have no idea where to begin! Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated

Edit: Ooopsie I just realised there is already a sticky thread for asking for recommendations

try using Spotify, it will recommend new music based on the stuff you listen to. also the Spotify radio feature is good for discovering new stuff.

Alt-J are a must listen to band. Start with An Awesome Wave (1st album) and venture into the new album when you find your getting bored which shouldn't happen for quite some time.

The Strypes are worth a listen. Young group of lads from Cavan that were highly recommended by Paul Weller.

I was using Jango but found it seems to repeat the same old stuff. I'll definitely give Spotify a go

Ive just started listening to Pink Floyd, have already been through most of Led Zeppelin, the doors, some the smiths and Fleetwood Mac. could anyone suggest any other albums from other bands from this era, late sixties- seventies, similar enough to but not strictly confined to that genre. Cheers

War on Drugs Lost in the Dream is a pretty good album.

There's a few non event songs but a couple of killer tracks makes up for it.

Steely Dan are worth a listen, a bit more challenging than some of the bands you mention, by that I mean that there is a serious jazz/muso vibe of their music which for some might be a turn off and tbh it's only recently that I have finally got in to them in a big way but they are worth the effort.
