Decent (but not-too-pricey) grinder?

I'm looking for suggestions for a grinder that's worth getting - though I'm hoping to avoid paying a huge sum for one... just something that can get me onto beans rather than pre-ground stuff.

I use a french press and a moka pot, just in case that makes any difference.

Don't have a machine yet, but hold aspirations of getting a Gaggia Classic at some stage in the future.

A good ceramic hand grinder will do you for the french press and possible the moka.

How much is not too pricey?

You could get a good hand grinder for €30 and would be perfectly fine(if you'll pardon the pun) for french press or even moka.

You'd want to spending about€150 on an electronic at least but even that won't do for espresso I don't think.

Thanks - someone got me a hand-grinder before but I think it was more for show than real use... took an awful lot of work to get very little return.

Do the hand ones tend to offer a set grind or can you adjust them?

Well I'm planning to suggest one as an idea for a present, so I don't want to go in with a €200 model and get laughed at!

I'm happy enough with a hand one as long as it's decent (see above) - wouldn't be a bad place to start, I suppose.

I use this to grind for my filter, it's adjustable and takes less than 2 mins to grind 18g of coffee. Not a badd place to start though it would take an age if you needed to use it for an espresso machine.

If you're going to get a hand grinder, get one with ceramic blades. (Hario or Porlex)
I've a Hario hand grinder I use with an aeropress when travelling and it works well.

The finer the grind needed the more work required - hence why they're fine for a french press but not ideal for espresso.

Do not get a blade grinder. You'd be better off with a hand cermaic burr grinder.

I use my hario to grind espresso. It's fine but takes a couple of minutes. I'd like a Eureka Mignon at some point...

One o fthe cheaper . Have had one for 5/6 years no problems.

only fault is adjustment is very fine so adjusting between different coffee grinds if laborious

I have the baratza encore and it's perfect for someone who doesn't do espresso. It's great for coarser grinds (compared to hand mills such as the Hario/Porlex) and switching between grinds is easy.
