Biggest regrets in life?

I don't have any major regrets, but lots of little ones. I always look at it this way: Think of something positive that happened in your life since you did (or didn't do) the thing(s) that you regret. Well, that positive thing probably wouldn't have happened.

I often regret not spending more time thinking about what I wanted to do with my life when I was younger, I think I wasted my potential a bit and, more importantly, ended up on a career path I'm not happy with. However, I'm doing pretty well for myself and if I had done things any differently I certainly wouldn't have met my wonderful other half. I wouldn't make that trade now.

I look at regrets like this, I am happy where I am here and now, very happy. If I was to change some of the small things I might have done differently in my past I might not arrive at the place I am now.

The most biting regrets are those which lead to current unhappiness, right now I am happy! I would like to be working in a different job, but if I had changed careers I wouldn't have met certain friends who introduced me to my wife for example.

So, all said and done, I wouldn't change a thing. Rough with the smooth and make sure you try to get through it all with some perspective.

Aaahhhh but his breakthrough as a successful comedian didn't come until the 1970's – when he was in his 30's! ;-)

While I am happy enough with my life and happy enough with my future prospects (decent job and potential for a new career coming up), I sincerely regret not applying for the Gardaí as soon as I did my Leaving Cert. I got a good score in it (480) and it is something I wanted. I did have a bit of external pressure to go to university and get "life experience", but I could have stood my ground and gone for what I really wanted if I had been a bit more stubborn and bold.

I didn't. I think the ship has sailed on the Gardaí for me. Though the Gardaí do recruit people up to the age of 35, so you never know what the future holds...

Hurting people, whether it be physically or emotionally, intentional or accidental, when I think back to things like that I wish I had never of done them. I believe regrets are lessons learned, they are usually the things you tend not to repeat.

Two, firstly starting my postgrad, second selling my ticket to Slane Castle 2003. RHCP, QOTSA, Foo Fighters, and more. Probably missed out on what would have been one of the best nights of my life so far.

What are you waiting for? :)

I've no regrets. Everything has been a learning curve and the path has lead me to great experiences and some amazing friends.

I regret Going to college and doing a course I didn't enjoy, stuck with it thinking having a degree would sort me out and things would fall into place.
I regret not doing well enough in that course so I could get into the post grad I wanted to do.
I regret not treating an ex girlfriend as well as I should of and not trying hard enough to make it work.
I regret buying a car in the uk which has caused me a good deal of stress.
I regret not pursuing soccer as I was naturally talented.

I've made plenty of bad decisions in life but we are all shaped by our experiences and I feel that I'm an alright guy at the end of the day and that hopefully at some stage I'll get back on that pony.

I was there. Feeder were there too, who I loved at the time. Savage day.

Taking up smoking from a young age. Paying for it now cnut to give up.

You could give up now and then at least not have a further regret in 10 years?

Much, much easier said than done! Although I would recommend an e-cig before they make them illegal. I haven't touched a real cigarette in weeks, chuffed! :D

Giving a certain waster way too much of my time/life when I was in my early twenties.
Not listening to others who could see my mistake, and essentially taking years to get over the hurt and anger this 'C' inflected with their lies and deceit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭SmilingLurker

I regret not taking more risks and grabbing every opportunity.

I am very happy, happily married, two great kids, a well paid job, I have traveled, worked on a few continents, partied, been serious, been employed, started a business, lost money, got degrees, dived, surfed, skydived, skiied, climbed mountains, had bad relationships. I regret none of those things. I regret the moping, evenings at home, tv, games, the times when I am not living.

Life is great if you grab and run with it.

I know, I loved Feeder too. Fortunately I got to see them a year or two previously when they supported Sterophonics in Ireland, another great gig, they were arguably better than Stereophonics on the night. Slane would have been after John Lee passed away though, they became increasingly more melancholy after that happened.

Travelling was of little interest in my twenties, but its something I've wanted to do more now that I'm in my thirties. So I regret that, but hope to change in the future at some stage.

Letting someone into my life that changed its course for good wasn't one of my best moves.

Definitely regret not putting myself first more in my life so far, which is something I have difficultly doing.

Aye, I remember being very disappointed with the first album after John died (Comfort in Sound I think), although after listening to it later it grew on me a bit. Completely different style though, and nothing close to the earlier stuff which was brilliant.

They got very poppy later so I lost interest. I think when Grant settled down and had kids it was over.

I don't really believe in regrets but if I have regrets they are career regrets. As a teen that was pretty wise beyond my years I knew what was 'best' for me and what would interest me. It's hard to say I regret not making these hard decisions as I, like a lot of people, had decisions foisted on me by those that had other motivations. I know NOW that I should have had the courage to put my foot down. So do I regret not putting my foot down? Well, I was only a yungfella dealing with an overbearing parent. I suppose I could regret not being defiant but it would have meant a war I would lose one way or another. Maybe I should regret having duff guidance but I can't regret something out of my control.

Not getting involved in different sports. Almost 30 now, and just learning to rollerblade to take up inline hockey, and ice hockey. ... probably in time for next year. Like starting a race when the competitors are crossing the line!

    I regret nothing :)

Deciding to go to UCD to study Computer Science. Both going to UCD AND to study Computer Science. Totally dulled by the subject now ( even though I was quite a good programmer ). Wish I studied Drama or Philosophy or Psychology.
