First time camper van insurance

Hi,

I've joust bought a 1985 Renault Trafic camper van, 2.1 diesel. I have very little experience with owning a campervan but I'm hoping to give it a try for the winter.

-Can anyone recommend a place to get a reasonable insurance quote?
-Would I be able to have it insured as a classic considering the age?
-Are the age limits for insurance?

Hi, Welcome to the camper community. Winter may not be the best time to give it a try but keep going for at least a year to experience all the seasons. As far as I know Doleman are the only company that do motorhome insurance. It should cost you around E350. You'll get plenty of information on this forum and also on "Motorhome Craic". Happy camping and keep her between the ditches.

I guessed Winter was not the best season to start camping, but heres hoping everything goes well for me.

Usually 25+ full licence and they'll typically want you to have another vehicle although you can pay extra to get around that. Insurance via the clubs can be more flexible.

Heating is a requirement really for winter camping not just for the cold but the condensation.

You will probably need an engineers report for it for Dolmens. I did when insuring my 97 Transit last year. It cost me €80 I think from the Main dealer in Cork just to check it over. They give you 2 weeks to get this done, if you DOE is due soon enough it would be a good idea just to get that done at the same time. its €110 now :eek: since the RSA added a "road safety levy"

You will also need photos of the Van for them including the gas cylinder that needs to be visibly supported by 2 straps. They were very picky about that one.
Proof of no claims, current insurance cert and copy of drivers license plus a utility bill were all required.

I think they had a age limit of 70.
