Confirmation from the Chief Justice that tenders are to be invited before the end of the year for the development of a new courts complex for Limerick city.

The site is Costello's yard on Mulgrave Street next to the prison.

I believe the OPW are also working on delivering a replacement city Garda headquarters and a tender for this project should be advertised in the not too distant future as well.

Space permitting it would make sense for these two facilities to be co-located at the same site.
New courthouse to be built in Limerick

The Chief Justice of Ireland has confirmed plans to build a new criminal courts complex next to Limerick Prison will go out to tender before the end of the year.

Mrs Justice Susan Denham was speaking during a visit to Limerick to mark the opening of the combined Courts Service offices at Merchants Quay,
Prior to the opening of the combined offices, there were separate offices for both the district court and circuit court.

Addressing a number of judges and other legal professionals from the region, Mrs Justice Denham said the opening of the combined offices was a “historic occasion in the delivery of court services in Limerick city and county”.

She also praised the work and committment of the Courts Service staff despite the increased pressures being placed on the organisation.
It is hoped that all criminal cases will be dealt with at the courts complex when it opens in 2015.

The Office of Public Works (OPW), which will oversee the construction of the new facility, is expected to seek tenders from interested parties in the coming weeks.

Would be nice if they could open up the new court from the Roxboro Road side as well as the Mulgrave Street side.

The Roxboro Road is awful miserable looking!

Absolutely. It should be a necessity. Improvements to the Roxboro road have been long muted and this would be an important element of such a plan.

As would the redevelopment of another prime city centre site; the Bus Eireann yard on the opposite side of the road. It's just a wasteland of concrete and industrial sheds that contributes nothing to it's environment in it's current form!

First actions on the Opera Centre site are underway. The council are providing 60 parking spaces on the site of the former Tiger Lilies restaurant. They are currently in the process of levelling the site. It will eventually be built on but in the short term it will be for Disc parking.

    http://www.limerickleader.ie/news/business/business-news/video-car-park-spaces-created-with-demolition-of-opera-centre-buildings-1-5643833

Also reported that '75 staff at the department of economic development and planning are set to relocate to the former AIB Bank on Patrick Street in January.'

Also as part of the City of Culture programme, a childrens science centre (or somthing similar, I can't exactly remember) will open in the CahillMyRoberts building beside Trinity Rooms.

So that's 3 sites being tackled soon enough. Here's hoping the full project goes ahead soon.

It's a step in the right direction.I'd love to see the tourist office move down to where Clohessys & Milanos is-maybe they could do something with the old ESB building.Wouldn't be a bad place for tourists-you have the river & the wider footpaths/boardwalk etc. That Cahillmyroberts building needs to be demolished along with the old Dunnes & the tax office-the sooner the better

I vaguely remember talk of some gaelscoil or other relocating to that ESB building. Can't remember if it was just a rumour though.

Heard that a while back too.Nothing ever came of it-I wish they'd do something with it-undermines the quay improvements a little bit

I believe there are issues with the lease (more so on the Department of Education side) along with the condition of the building. It really is in a terrible state.

It's a very basic, cheap structure anyhow. Essentially a galvanised shed dating from the era when nobody gave a toss about the riverfront.

Same site owned by one of Limericks well known property developers so not sure long term would the school last there, no point in moving in to get turfed out again

Plans for the new shopping precinct located around Arthur's Quay are expected to be unveiled by the end of the year.
The redevelopment of the shopping centre forms a key part of the Limerick 2030 renewal plan for the entire city.
It's hoped the new plans will entice some of the main British stores such as Marks and Spencer to come right into the heart of the city.

Still bleating on about Marks & Spencer

If the Parkway Valley gets developed, that is where they will locate, not the city.

Oh right. I hope the plan is for high quality buildings and not just a load of mirrored windows a la Riverpoint and Bedford Row. IMO nice modern buildings are pretty rare in Ireland.

The Liverpool One project certainly is a great success and I hope to one day get to visit it but I fear you are not comparing like with like. Liverpool city region has a population of 1.5 million. Being generous, the Limerick city region including Ennis (20,000), Limerick (100,000), Shannon (10,000) and Nenagh (10,000), has a population of 150,000, 10 times smaller.

Limerick has a population of 191,809 since 2011 so your point is inaccurate.

The Limerick Marketing Company has been created with the aim of doubling the number of tourists that visit Limerick in 5 years. It has a budget of €350'000 and is to be based in the city centre. It will be in charge of limerick.ie and its first big challenge will be marketing the city of culture next year.

The rebranding and marketing of the city is a key part of Limerick 2030.

First order of business should be to fix that ugly website!

That is madness considering Roxboro roundabout actually works quiet well most of the time. But as with everything in Limerick there are ulterior motives behind everything. Knowing this place they will remove the roundabout and try talk M&S into setting up there.

Look at our lovely marina in the pic on the 2030 webpage. Such a roaring success. Seeing as though everyone in limerick owns a sail boat.

More along their line to get people back to work instead of creating more places for people to spend the money they dont have. UL this, LIT that, culture this culture that. Do these fuc**in people realize most of Limerick dont:

    1 Have any culture
    2 Own Boats
    3 Go to college
    4 Give a **** about rugby
    5 Have a job

All the big plans and they havent even finished the last big plan. (RS) Maybe the planners should actually start planning for the people who fu**ing live here instead of the people they wished did.

Limerick (city and county combined) had a recorded population of 191,306 as per the 2011 census. An increase of 3.9% from 2006.

The "official" city population as measured by the antiquated boundary method was 56,779. A decrease of 5% on 2006.

The population of the Limerick city urban area which includes Raheen, Dooradoyle, Castletroy etc is around 91,000.

Sorry i was off by 503 people. Reason i highlighted that was because it would drastically increase the population of the highlighted area by the previous poster. Im not sure why the poster took Nenagh, Tipp and Clare into account but excluded County Limerick.

Wonder will those plans be as good as the original ones for the shopping precint that was meant to go in the Opera centre or the one down by Liddy street that the Leader ran a story on last year which also had some "expert" talking about M&S going into the old Dunnes building despite the fact that Dunnes still owned the building.:)

Is shopping the only thing that will save Limerick City?

I was going to thank your post but I disagree with pretty much all of your points - except for one - owning a boat!

It'll be interesting to get some clarity on what specifically is in the pipeline for the Arthur's Quay area. There are mixed signals emanating at the moment. Will it entail a shopping district with a series of interconnecting streets and public spaces or is it going to be just another large covered generic shopping centre?

The former was what was proposed a couple of years back in the height of the madness. Of course that did also involve demolishing the Debenhams/Penneys block too.

Whatever happens there's no doubt that the area is hugely underutilised at the minute. A comprehensive and sustainable redevelopment would reap major benefits for the city centre and indeed the city at large!

You dont think Roxboro roundabout works well?
You dont think most people would hack off their right arm for an M&S in Limerick?
You think the Marina is a success?

Why put a shopping center there? Just remaking the same mistakes we already did! Am i the only one that can see that there is already a failing shopping center on that exact site (albeit a bad one)!! WTF like!
