They hadn't played in over a year anyway, Staley co founded Mad Season in 95 with Pearl Jams Mike McCready.
The two disk remastered Mad Season album, released earlier this year, is fantastic. Includes an excellent live concert version of the album.

Its a bit surprising to see people still are such fans of Nirvana.

I never liked them. Juvenile and shallow music. Really shocking stuff.

I can understand how some teen who is angry at the world, and doesn't really have a defined tasted in music could like them, but to still be a fan in your 30s?? More than a bit odd I'd say.

Although the music isn't the thing I disliked most about them. It was that bloody awful sloppy dress sense it imbued on some of my peers as a youngster. Greasy hair, grungy unkempt appearance, and a general apathy to personal hygiene.

I guess some of us aren't too concerned about image and perceptions.

Ah yes, Artsy unplugged acoustic sets, I got the vinyl before everyone else got into it, look I've got the goatee to prove it, but you wouldn't understand, you don't wear skinny jeans.

1 fair-trade peruvian lemon peach decaf please ....(cycles off on retro recycled hemp bicycle bought in Kashmir)

    Lol..

    I was there man!

I think "drainpipes" (skinny jeans) had had their day, I remember swearing never ever to wear them again..

    Oh, how fashion fools us!

I don't have a bike, hemp or otherwise!

    ;-)

I've always liked Nirvana but always felt Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam had a bit more depth to them (and more accomplished musicians?? I dunno though) but the Alice in Chains unplugged is untouchable for me. Listening now, and down in a hole is sounding amazing. Aic unplugged compared to Nirvana's is like men vs boys imo.

But like everything in the world, food, drink, film, books, etc the most accessible and dare I say simplified version appeals most to the masses, and it makes sense.

Yeah, lots of bands totally reshaped the industry all over the world by releasing a single album.

In the words of motley crue, "we went into rehab off the back of a worldwide sellout tour and came out with our careers over. What happened? Nevermind was released"

Ye see, I don't give a f**k about "the industry" or bands that reshape it. Especially when non stop rotation of a video on MTV was the main reason they reshaped anything :pac:

Pretty sure we had boy bands growing up. I will grant you that the early 90s had a great selection of bands, but I think everyone thinks that 'their' time regarding music is the best.

It's painful to watch AIC Unplugged, knowing what lay ahead, and the pain he was in. Kurt's death, although violent, was quick. Layne wasted away, and died all alone. :(

Pet Sounds, Sgt Peppers, Dark Side of the Moon, Never Mind the Bollocks......

    Didn't need MTV.

He lay dead for two weeks before his mother came looking for him, Mike Starr a former AIC member who recently died himself was the last person to visit his apartment . The final years were a nightmare and his family were used to him not communicating with them, his accountant contacted his mother when he noticed that no money was been drawn from his account.

His pet cat Sadie (which I notice is your username :pac:) was alive in the apartment when they found him.

A bad scene all around I suspect when you consider the body had reached an advanced stage of decomposition with the humidity in the apartment over a 2 week period.

Was never really into Nirvana but I love the Unplugged album. "Jesus doesn't want for a sunbeam"....I listened to that for hours. If you listen to All Apologies on that album you will realise that Kurt Cobain was immensely talented singer and song writer.

I get angry when I see knobs smashing up guitars and instruments onstage. What a waste! One of the main reasons I never liked Nirvana, bad attitude I know. If anyone touched my Strat it 'd be the last thing they do!

regard to Unplugged, my favourites were Live and Oasis (with Noel singing and an orchestra too).

Our own Cranberries did a cracking Unplugged set too back in the day.

Christ what's the big deal with smashing instruments , again defining people because what they did on stage  Hendrix-knob, The Who-knobs

I'm a guitar player, I wouldn't go around smashing my own gear. Then again I'm not being supplied by Marshall or Fender :(

I liked the Oasis set, you got to see Noel Gallagher the songwriter, much more interesting than if Liam had done it.

Liam got piss drunk and wouldn't do it, he backed out about a half hour before they went on stage. Noel the professional that he is went on a played a decent set.

You can see the kind of sh1te NG had to put up with over the years though, remember the second night in Wembly Stadium in 2000 which was recorded for CD and video and Liam was pissed on stage making up his own lyrics to the songs. 80 plus thousand people payed to see Oasis and he acts the bollix.
Thankfully he was sober the first night which they used exclusively on the "Familiar to Millions" CD.

The point I was responding to was that they were "overhyped". Given what happened as a result of one album, they couldn't be classed as overhyped. You may not think they were a great band, but that's also missing the punk ethos that grunge grew out of.

Brilliant band, I love In Utereo. Raw, angry and full of hate. Most importantly, it was real.

    Best Nirvana album there is.

    also :D

We did. One of the things that Nirvana did was drive boy bands, manufactured pop, crappy 80's hair metal and spandex into the ground. That was an amazing time to be alive.

Imagine if today when Justin bieber was releasing an album, instead of sycophantic media darlings asking him how great he was, nobody picked up the phone to his pr people at all? The world would be a better place.

Really the world a better place, that's a bit much, he's not a war criminal. Their was crap music in the early 90's as well. I think people get blindsided when talking about bands and eras in which they grew up in, yes Nirvana were great they really didn't kill off anything, music goes in cycles like any trend. People always look for something different after a while.

For me Arctic Monkeys came at a perfect time for me, I was 15 and could relate to them, but it doesn't mean there wasn't any crap music in 2006.

I can't stand Lady Gaga, she is one of these type of musician to the point the music is almost an after taught, but maybe this is more a media thing.

I'd say she's more of a theatrical performer than a musician. Definitely not for everyone's taste but she has got a great voice (particularly her lower range) and has been writing songs and playing piano for years so I would imagine her passion for music is genuine.
One thing in particular I find with popstars now, it's like buy my album and while your at it buy my perfume etc etc

To be honest if I got paid lots of money to put my name to a perfume I'd be doing it too! :P And it doesn't bother me as much when someone like Lady Gaga or Beyoncé releases a perfume (at least they got where they were through talent) than when you see people like Katie Price doing it.
there is great music out there regardless if it gets played on radio or not.

    100% agree with that.
This goes back to my earlier comment that rock n roll is juvenile, there is some 14 year old at the moment into some artist the same way a lot of us were into Nirvana, just because you don't like or get it doesn't mean it's bad.

By the same token then, you don't like or get Lady Gaga but that doesn't mean she's bad, right? :pac:

Also I said I do like Nirvana, and I do get why they were huge, but for me they were just a bit too samey. Say what you will about Courtney Love, I think Hole's Live Through This is a superior album to Nevermind. I also think The Smashing Pumpkins were a far superior band as they pushed their sound and experimented a lot more. Again, just my own opinion.

Well ya I can have an opinion on artist like Lady Gaga, can't I, doesn't mean it's anymore or less valid than anyone elses. Also I would never question somebody being genuine about doing music, just because I didn't like the music or how they present themselves, but liking the music itself is a different thing altogether.

I don't get why adults bash Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, I think it's more the fact they seem to be everywhere in the media rather than anything musical.

It was this MTV unplugged session that introduced me to the grizzly old curmudgeon that is Neil Young.

This song in particular is one I've come back to time and again.

She is talented, and all that but music is too intangible to describe why you like it. Homer gave me quotes like she is more a theatre performer, well that great for her, but why should it make me care. Take Lou Reed and Neil Young people hate the sound of there voices but I don't.

They were overhyped, that one album really is'nt great in comparison to many other bands releases in their genre. It sold because nirvana were on geffen and MTV played smells like teen spirit non stop. Throw in the standard issue photogenic tortured genius frontman and you have the mix for the next big thing in a era when mainstream rock was completely out of ideas. They were overhyped and overrated.

    Punk ethos? Puhlease
Black Flag had a punk ethos
Minor Threat had a punk ethos
The Damned had a punk ethos

Having a major label buy you out of your contract in the hope of making it big and then whining like a bitch when you achieve your goal is'nt really much of a punk ethos.
