VW Golf 06 1.4l – timing belt query?

Hi,
I looked at a VW Golf ’06 1.4L with c.47,000 miles on it. I asked the salesman if the timing belt had been replaced and he told me that it had been checked in the service that they’d done in the garage and that it was ok. He said that timing belts on the 1.4L engine can last up to 150,000kms.

I’m not an expert on cars but from everything I’ve read, usually timing belts have to be replaced after 5/6 years or after c.60,000 miles (whichever comes first). I’ve never heard of a timing belt being good for say 10-11 years (e.g. if the car did very low mileage from now on). I’d be surprised if I was being told a tale as it was with a very reputable garage but seems a bit fishy to me.

Btw car comes with a 6mth warranty. If the timing belt went in this time would the garage be obliged to fix it? (or would they say that it was something outside of their control?)
