Gravity - best place to see it in Ireland?

I'm incredibly excited about seeing Gravity, but I want to make sure I get the best experience possible! Which cinema would be the best to see it? I'm thinking either Cineworld or Odeon iSense in Dublin, but I'm not completely sure.

It definitely seems like the kind of movie to experience in a proper place.

Screen 1 in the Lighthouse! Big enough screen and most comfy seats in Dublin imo.

I don't mind the comfy seats as much, I want wherever has the best picture and the best sound. The "IMAX" (in quotation marks as I hear it's not proper IMAX) in Cineworld would probably be the best bet, but what exactly is iSense out in the Odeon? Is it actually decent?

The seating gradient in the Odeon is poor and ticket prices are over the top. The "IMAX" at Cineworld is better but as has been pointed out it's not true IMAX but how many films are actually shot in IMAX anyway. You should consider Savoy Screen 1. Always liked going to premiers there.

I was contemplating heading to Cineworld myself but I think I'll support my own local cinema.

We go to Showtime in Ashbourne. Good seating gradient, good seats, clean all round.
Having said that i would love to see Gravity on an imax screen but the logistics for me arent good.

Was thinking of taking a trip up to the IMAX in Cineworld as well for this, is the screen that much bigger than a regular one?

Is it a large one? Usually it wouldn't matter, but for something like this, you really need to see it on a proper one.

I know we've a thread about the ins and outs of Cineworlds IMAX but speaking from my first experience (Captain Phillips last week). It was utterly underwhelming.

Screen one in the savoy is your only man.

I haven't seen Captain Phillips, but would it be any better seeing it on a big screen than on a normal screen? So far I've seen Pacific Rim, Star Trek, and The Hobbit and Pacific Rim was essentially the only movie that was worth seeing on a large screen. So essentially it's a toss-up between Screen One at the Savoy or IMAX at Cineworld? I know the Lighthouse Cinema is a beautiful one, but I want the proper movie experience over a nicer place.

The prices in the Savoy are probably the best around as well and I don't think there is a premium for screen 1. Broke my heart paying the guts of 35 quid in Cineworld.

Yes it's giant, has a nice effect of opening curtains as the film starts too.

Totes. I'd go just for those curtains !

Screen 17 IMAX in Cineworld is the best and largest screen in the country hands down.

Happened to be in Dublin when the Dark Knight Rises was finishing up in cinemas. Saw it in a near empty Screen 1 in the Savoy. Very impressive, the red curtains do make it!
Saw the Hobbit in Cineworld last Xmas and if I had it back I'd go with the Savoy.

How do you know if any given screening will be in screen 1 in the savoy?

add a ticket and go to pay, it will show the screen, alternatively if passing it in town, the top left film is in screen 1. Screen 2 is the next best, and is huge too.

so which is bigger, 17 in cineworld or 1 in the savoy?

So is IMAX in Cineworld really underwhelming? Bit disappointed now :(

It's a big screen, it's just not an IMAX screen. I find it better to sit near the front and you get the wow factor, especially with 3d films. I saw Gravity there about five rows from the front and it was pretty special. The Odeon is a similar story.

I've never been to the imax, so can't comment on it but I saw this in the iSense tonight and it was unreal. Brilliant film.

I saw Elysium in the BFI IMAX near Waterloo in London (supposedly the largest screen in the UK). Pretty steep / cramped balconys everyone sits at, and the screen really didn't seem that much larger the Cineworld's

Mark Kermode, who is usually 100% against 3D, has now made the announcement that Gravity should be seen in this way. It's been a toss up between Cineworld and the Savoy, so the decider will be which has better 3D!

Saw Iron Man 3 in Imax 3D there and was sorely underwhelmed.

Just go with Savoy Screen 1 imo.

There was some picture on here before with cineworld vs proper imax, and the real thing was much much bigger as far as I recall.

Technically Savoy 1 is bigger, but it depends on the aspect ratio of the film being shown.

If the film is 1.85:1, Cineworld 17 "IMAX" is bigger.
If the film is 2.35:1, Savoy 1 is bigger.

Vue 1 and 2 are way bigger than both of them, although the Savoy may retain a slight advantage for 2.35:1 films.

Would the 3D be different between any of them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,719 ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

I'd imagine it would be a lot better in Cineworld 17 since it has (I assume) a dual 2k projector setup. It would be brighter, which is probably the most important thing with 3D.

The size of the screen doesn't mean much anymore, especially with 3D, since all you're getting most of the time is Blu-ray resolution.

Oh and I hate 3D with a passion and will seeing Gravity in 2D.

I would normally agree with you, if it weren't for this -

I mean, this guy hates 3D. If you ever listen to his film review program with Simon Mayo, the amount of times he mentions his dislike for it is incredible. And yet he's saying that Gravity is worth seeing in 3D. I think for the spectacle, I might see it in 3D first and then if it is good enough, attempt to convince my girlfriend to see it in IMAX in London when we are there.

Even if 3D didn't look rubbish, even if it wasn't dark and even if I didn't have to wear the stupid glasses, I just don't care for it on principle. I don't think it draws you into the film anymore than more than having an extra two channels of sound behind you draws you in. Like 5.1 surround, 3D is a gimmick as far as movies are concerned. I don't give a crap about about seeing an extra dimension anymore than I do about hearing Star Destroyers flying over my head. What immerses me in a film is the quality of the visual storytelling, not the technology. In fact, the technology more often than not pulls me out of the film. Films are not meant to be technologically immersive experiences in the way that games are.
