I learned tonight on Only Connect on BBC Four that the sun orbits the centre of our galaxy. The sequence was Centre of the Galaxy, Sun, Earth and Moon, object that orbit each other.

Google tells me that the complete orbit of the sun around the centre of the galaxy takes about 250 million years. Who knew.

Depending on where you are standing, yes, it can be perceived as blue. Although technically it is transparent.

Did AHers know that the designated name for our sun is Sol? And that likewise the moon is known as Luna?

Therefore, our planet is in the Sol system - Sol being a relatively ordinary G2 yellow star. Sol's neighbouring stars include Alpha Cenatauri, Sirius,
Betelgeuse, Barnard's Star, Procyon, 61 Cygni and Regulus.

Our sun's star name is Sol.

Yes, we did actually. Asked the grandkids here and they knew too.

    It's also a Mexican beer.
An alternate spelling of the fifth tone of the diatonic scale in solfeggio.
A cafe in Kilkenny - if I remember correctly
    A colloidal solution
    A very old French coin..........

Technically it's white. We see it as blue. Read the link.

Also the currency in Peru. The Sol was replaced in the 1980's with the Nuevo Sol. And it is named in honour of the Sun.

Did you also know that grass is green
    And
    The sky is blue

No it's not, technically speaking the sky itself has no colour (it's transparent), rather the atmosphere reflects blue particles more than other colours, simply giving the appearance of it being blue.

For example, the sea is not blue itself, it's simply a reflection.

Sol and Terra are exactly one Astronomic Unit (AU) apart.

I don't like your link. Show me the line where it says that because I'm too lazy to read it all. Would it not only be technically white during the day because of the sun?

No need to be so rude. It is quite accepted to spell it Sol or So. Indeed, proper musical notation uses Sol almost exclusively.

I'm too lazy to hold your hand. Use google.

There's a particularly good page on NASA about it.

It's still blue at night, it's just too dark to see it.

No self-respecting person watches that program.

Ask a person which star is the nearest to the earth, they almost never know. Some people, when you tell them its the sun, they say "the sun is a star?"

Yep, and knowing WWII ended in 1945 makes me a professional historian, and knowing that eggs fried on a pan is called a fried egg makes me a Michelin starred Chef.

    All hail Sol!!

Earth could also be called Sol 3, as it is the third planet in the Sol system.

Actually, what with mothers blending up MaccyD's to feed their baby and the plummeting standards of cooking skills in general, that might not be all that wide of the mark.:pac:

I think it's fascinating that our sun has a designated astronomical name - Sol.
It's something that a lot of people aren't aware of.

The ancient Greeks called the sun Helios and it was Ra to the
Ancient Egyptians. Sol is a good name - short, easy to spell and
    pronounce and suitably timeless.

since it has an elliptical orbit around the sun earth does not remain a fixed distance. an AU is the average distance it maintains from the sun.
