A friend of mine bought a 4x4 in northern ireland part of the deal was that the seller (private sale) filled it with diesel. When he got home he got a service kit , oil filter, fuel filter, air filter ,oil etc when he took off the fuel filter it was full of red fuel he then siphoned some out of the tank obviously it was red too ! We are now wondering if it was kerosene or red diesel ? If he had of been stopped and dipped on the way home could he have been charged ? I understand there is a large fine for using the green diesel but if you use say cooking oil in a diesel and are stopped you get charged with not paying the duty on the fuel and not using a marked substance which is different I think ? Any opinions on this lads ? my friend drained the tank and bollocked the seller out of it of course he said he did not do it.

You would want to be very unlucky to get dipped the one time you had red in it.

Just put white in it from now on. He probably thought that white diesel is for towns people.

Is cooking oil not perfectly legal?

Thats what most people that get caught , twas my first time, got caught short on the way home etc bull****e. You would want to be the most unlunky of criminals to get caught on your first hit.

If I was buying in the north I'd be happy enough to see it full of red , washed white not good for the diesel gibletts in modern motors.

Can't understand this nonsense of dyed diesel at all. Why not just give farmers vouchers towards the price of diesel and stop dyeing it, and end the need for all these checks?

Ya but then what would we do with all the customs.

And can ya imagine the fiddling that would go on with vouchers.

I dread to hear it being discussed in case the government decide not to give and rebate and just have white diesel for every one

Cooking oil is legal but if it for use in a road vehicle duty or tax whatever they call it needs to be payed on it.

Just wondering as it wasn't green customs could probably only have done him on the duty ? Is it the same if you have an old diesel vehicle that will use kerosene happy enough could you get the 2k fine or just the duty like in cooking oil ?

Having all diesel as white is never going to happen in this country. It creates too much employment for customs and income from fines. Would make a lot of sense to give tax relief to the self employed. Would reduce so much hassle with theft.
