Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone remember the one where there was a family or something in a car, and they were in the car when it was being crushed like they do for scrap yards?

A few years ago, I bought the Charley Says DVD which has 280 public information films. They're all English ones but some are hilarious (and some aren't).]

I got it from Amazon last xmas.I must say a lot of them were kinda repetitive. But the Joe and Petunia ones were hilarious, even though they're sending out a serious message. And there are plenty of creepy ads on it too-the rabies ones,"this is the fire that burnt the house that jack built","where are your children tonight",the ones about what to do in nuclear strikes and fallout, and of course "the spirit of the dark lonely water".....

Why oh why didn't Irish TV make a similar compilation :-(

The end credits where they list the children (name / age / method of death for some) who died in farm accidents during 1976.

The COI Collection Volume 6: Worth The Risk is chock-full of great PIFs too.

It doesn't get more morbid than that.

Twould make you wonder why PSAs like these are rarely on our screens anymore, and the ones we do see nowadays take a more "laid back" approach.Unfortunately, terrible tragedies are still occurring on farms-in the same way as people are still drowning, fires are still occurring, dogs are still left roaming free, too many people are still being infected with HIV/AIDS.....to cut it short, these type of ads need to be brought back with hard hitting messages in order to make people take real notice.

Good to see that there are still a lot of road safety ads at least-they really can't afford to be relaxed about that.

    Does anybody remember these ones:

    "Firehound says...'Never give fire a chance,grr-ruff'"

"Where dya think yer goin?Have ya no sense?Ye'll get killed if ya carry on cyclin like that!"

"(sound of laughter and glasses clinking)Your party could quickly become.......(sound of a crash, followed by church bells) A funeral.DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE."

"Speeding.Only YOU can stop the serial killer within you."

And now for some of those short and not so sweet PSAs which lasted less than 30 seconds each:

"In the Glen Of Imaal, the military range lands are dangerous.Heed the warnings!!"

"Smoking in bed is a dangerous habit.Smoke your last one downstairs."

    "It goes without saying.Protect yourself.Use a condom."
(A silent Thom McGinty holding up a sign with those words, staring emotionlessly into the camera. He himself died of AIDS a short time later)

"Bees sting, mosquitoes bite.Antisan makes you feel alright".

I have a vague memory of a safety ad that showed various POV shots of children pulling pots and pans of boiling water down on top of themselves from cookers and getting scalded. It would have been late 70's on RTE though my memory of it is so vague that I could well have dreamed it.

I always remember it being dark when the ad was broadcast. Never saw it in daylight. One evening (about 1980/1981) it came on and the curtains weren't pulled. As the solemn voice spoke I thought I saw a shadow at our window.

    That sounds effin scary....

That reminds me of the TV licence ad where me man is watchin telly, and there is a knock on the door, the telly starts goin haywire,he is tryin to hide from view, and all of a sudden the writing on the TV screen is repeatedly saying "GO TO THE FRONT DOOR!!!"
(this ad is on the compilation posted by Darkdubh on this thread, tis just before the "John, did you put the cat out" ad)

just watched that ad again - thanks. The man in it was in Fair City [played Seamus Mannion].

There's also a short advert for the RTE Concert Orchestra's Greatest Themes LP which dates the sequence as winter 1987.

Remember EDITH? Evacuation Drill In The Home

This sensible gent having a referee's whistle hanging on a piece of string in a corner of the kitchen.
And one of the kids ask him 'Who's that for?'' And he tells them it's for EDITH

''Who?'' EDITH. Evacuation Drill In The Home. In the event of a fire the oul lad comes down stairs & blows the whistle & everyone has to get the fuk out!

Wasn't there one about covering up your butter to keep flies off it? Same woman as in the nightie/fire ad? I seem to remember her saying something like "salmonella is something you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy!" I think it was designed to make you think about exactly where those flies might have been with their little fly-feet before landing on your butter....

Funnily enough that reminds me of a safety ad that used to be on RTE in the late 70's early 80's.It had all forklift drivers crashing into walls driving off piers etc.I've mentioned it a couple of times on All things retro but no one else seems to remember it.

Fiat must have provided cars for making Irish road safety ads, a few I remember are

A yellow Mirafiori battering plastic cones to show the differences in braking distances on wet and dry roads

A lad waking up hungover, looking at the keys of his Mirafiori on the bedside locker and not remembering how he got home

A Fiat 128 being driven an empty motorway with the voiceover saying If you had the only car in the world you could drive as you please but you don't, I think this ad also featured a Mercedes trying to turn at junction when he should have gone straight and the voiceover saying both lanes were banjaxed:D

By any chance does anybody remember an ad which showed a toddler toddling around the floor while its mother was doing the ironing, the toddler grabs onto the lead, then you don't see what happens but you can hear the iron falling and the child screaming, and then at the end of the ad you see a still freeze frame of a toy plastic baby doll with a hot iron melting its head, and a serious female voice saying..."Keep your children safely away from flexes."
    ??
I don't actually remember that ad being shown too often back then.

The only other one I remember is,I think, the first one they brought out-where the sponge is just sitting on the couch in a darkened room watchin the telly and saying nothing, then out of nothing a hand comes from behind the couch and starts choking him,and almost instantly the "scary" closing line is said..."TV SPONGERS BEWARE,THE SQUEEZE IS ON!!"

    Another couple of flashbacks-

Remember an ad for either speeding or drink driving, where they show a person washing blood off his/her hands underneath a running tap,but when they take their hands away from the tap and show their palms, they are still steeped in blood-and the V.O. says "If you kill someone, you may try,but you will never wash away the stain."

    And one from UTV:
    (animated)

    "Doctor,doctor,I'm feeling down,can I have a prescription?"
    "Doctor,doctor,my finger is sore,can I have a prescription?
    'Doctor,doctor,my head hurts,can I have a prescription?"

Another rather morbid ad-possibly from early 90s and again about road deaths...
First they show one body on the road covered with a red robe, then the camera moves to another part of the road and shows another body again covered with a red robe, and then they show the whole of the long road, and there are bodies lying all over and all along the length of the road and into the distance-all covered with red robes.
And at the end of the ad it says:
    "Let's Stop The Bloody Slaughter".
