Can Android tablet read/write to large ext drives?

Am looking at getting a tablet with built-in sd card reader so that I can transfer photos/videos from a camera to the tablet and HDD. Also, to transfer movies/music from the HDD to the tablet.

The big question I have, along with other smaller questions:
Is it possible to connect a large (500+Gb) external HDD to a tablet?

I know that most (all?) tablets cannot power the HDD, but what if the HDD had it's own battery power supply? Will the tablet still be able to read/write to the HDD?

What format does the HDD have to be in? NTFS? FAT32? Other?

NB: Usage of internet/cloud is not a feasible option, nor having a laptop/PC.

My Ainol tablet reads / writes to a 2tb HDD.

My 2tb is a self powered one, which may be a factor

If the tab does not pick it up, a more laborious option is
connect both devices to a PC, and copy using the PC perhaps
