I've been talking about how much I hate that Passat on Facebook.
    It's hideous.

What are these Balenos actually like in reality - are they as reliable as youd expect from a good Japanese car (im taking the ads claim that its as reliable as a corolla with a massive pinch of salt.

And how bad are they to drive (okay that's a bit negative) - or rather how would they compare to a Corolla of the same vintage.

I really shouldn't be thinking of this - but its a bit too near me to rule it out lol.

Ps - what are they like on rust

    thanks a mil

They're very like a mazda 323 tbh. A little smaller but similar in feel.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
I like the B3 model myself. Its a fine example of auto****e nonetheless though.

Imo They wouldn't have the same level of build quality as the Corolla but like many jap cars of that era they do seem to be very reliable.

Rust can be an issue on some of these particularly around the windscreen but that doesn't mean that there isn't rust free examples out there. I would just have a good look around underneath and around the body work for rust just like you would do on any car of that age.

Tbh tough if it's clean enough it's good value motoring imo. Id happily drive one if I was in need of a cheap run around.:)

well would you get 150 for the car itself for scrap? +300 for the wheels, +300 for the coilovers asuming they might fit other vw's... 750 then :P

A parted out banger is always worth more than the banger itself ;)

Have only ever been a passenger in a 323 - but the 323 seemed fine.

How would they compare with a 99 corolla (Baleno I mean).

Take it the fact that its "very like a Mazda 323" means its actually okay.

May have got a bit of a rush to the head tbh - its not overly faraway from me - im still figuring out if that's a good or bad thing :D.

Tempting to give it a miss - hard to imagine how it would be significantly better then the Corolla outside in the yard that gets bugger all use - so "can be borrowed" anytime I want it.

Think the Panda would suit my needs better - even though its more expensive (but for a newer car - which to be fair doesn't bother me at all).

    Thank you for the help

If it's not too far away from you it might not be a bad idea to go and view it and see for yourself if it suits or not.:)

    Good point

But alas - I had a rush of blood to the head when I saw the Baleno first - have thought more about it.

have decided that ideally id like a fiesta or Panda type machine.

Its definitely a car with potential to be a good runabout for someone - and thank you for your help and posting the car.

But I will give it a miss I think.

Good car - just not what I want

    Sorry for any offence caused:(

Folks are the 407 an awful car?

How do you define awful? Two full years of NCT in a newish family size car for just over a grand seems awful good value to me :)

No, it is not a good car, and no it is not a very reliable car and I would investigate the "Clutch is good but slight vibration" issue

Well I know what you're saying but your last sentence said it all. I knew there was a reason it was so cheap :(

    Thanks Unkel.

No.. they're not bad on petrol imho .. 35-38 mpg easily achievable. . Some guys on ford forums talk of 42 plus on a good run. I had an automatic 2l diesel tdci and was lucky to get 35mpg so these are relatively economical without having the associated massive tdci maintenance bills.

should be in the dreamer thread imo. admittedly it has a nice wedge of tax and test. but the guts of 2k for a 200k miles 12 year old calcutta spec golf. €1000 - 1250 imo.

I feel every price on here is in need of a bit of haggling, but you're probably right.

Yep, I am fairly certain them 406's did not come with a 1.6 litre engine
