    Salaries are quoted before tax.

A single person earning €35,000 would take home a bit over €2,200 per month.

Have a look at this cost-of-living table.

After rent (which would take about one-third of your net pay each month for an average, decent place). Add some comforts like health insurance, car insurance, fuel (electricity, gas, petrol) and you don't have a lot of spare cash for your weekly groceries & clothes. A restaurant meal for two in a 'mid-range' place would be a luxury that you could not do too often.

€35k is not rich. You can live comfortably on it, but you will not be putting a deposit on a house any time soon with it.

I was earning 24K in Dublin at the tail end of the boom. I had a lovely room and a nice flat in one of those new builds in Dublin 4 next to the DART, bought new clothes pretty much whenever I wanted (on a weekly basis), ate out at least once a week, went on several holidays a year. How is someone on 35K only able to go to a restaurant as a rare luxury?

if were of the super rich I would use my wealth to gain political influence and turn Ireland from a socialist country [/B]to a country that embraces success rather than punishing it.

    Hilarious.

Anyway, rich to me means never having to think: Can I afford this? about anything you want to buy - after the mortgage, house insurance, car payment/tax/insurance, utilities, mobile phone bill, groceries, etc (all the necessities) are taken care of.

Knowing that I can pay the children's university fees without saving or feeling the squeeze elsewhere. Knowing I can leave the immersion/heating on, and not having to rush back home in a panic or phoning someone to check it. Knowing the gym fees are taken care of, the golf club, the yacht club etc - not saying I'd be joined to everything, but if I was rich I might subsidise them.

I'd really like to be able to donate a substantial amount yearly to cultural, sporting, charity causes without having to be stingey about it because I really can't afford it.

Must buy a lotto ticket someday. :D

I would be just travelling the world non-stop til I've seen almost everywhere and experienced almost everything. This weekend, Machu Picchu then I think Hawaii for a quick break.

    :(

Hopefully I'm old enough and wise enough to avoid making a right tit of myself if I came in to money. I'd get a kick out of helping others if they were in need. That would be fun

Every time I buy a lotto ticket.

The main things I dream about would be simply the removal of the stress of being broke, the things I could do for friends and family (maybe help remove some of that stress for them) and, in the case of a massive win, the dream house with a swimming pool in the basement ;)

Yeah buying a pub or club and getting someone else to run it is something I always imagine doing too. Even if it wasn't profitable, I just have this thing about wanting to own a drinking establishment. :pac:

I'd start buying up the things that made the things I like. An Indian restaurant, a craft beer pub, a small distillery...that way, even if I lost all the money, I'd still have the things I like.

Surely you're minted, Tom. After all those films and all.

    He doesn't tip though..
The Cruiser named a "bad tipper". Also "rude". Also "complete screaming lunatic". Okay, that last one was us.

From Post Chronicle: "A report from the website entitled bitterwaitress.com has labeled TomKat a cheapskate. BitterWaitress.com has thousands of entries listing the identities of the generous gratuity avoiders. The so-called '****ty Tipper Database' has famous names and regular citizen's side-by-side for turning cheap when the check came.
    Tipper's Name: Tom Cruise
    Where it happened: New York
    Total bill/Tip amount/Percentage: $458.63/$5.00/ 1%
    What happened?
Tom and Katie Holmes were absolutely rude as anything I've ever seen!"

I do wonder but after the house, the car, the fancy holidays, the swish clothes and helping your friends and family out, would you not be stuck for something else to buy?

If I suddenly became rich tomorrow, I would move to Ireland asap.

Sometimes i wonder what i would be doing, who i would be with and how i would spend my weekends if i was rich.

I wonder would you get tired of flying around the world in a private jet, staying in top hotels and partying in exclusive clubs every night? If that doesn't sound appealing you could just do what ever you wanted all day.

I think life would be pretty much the same but I'd never have to worry about money. I don't think I'd do anything much different

I often think about being rich and I mean mega rich starting my own Google or something and selling it.

It always ends the same way buy a home for myself so I don't have to pay rent/mortgage then buy up as much Irish bonds as possible and cancel them then go back to work because I'd be bored.

Outside of dublin 35k is loads for a single person. Take home pay would be around 2300 a month.Lovely houses going for 100k. Id say 70,000 for a married person with kids outside dublin is loads.

Sadly, very few people, even those who are quite rich, actually see themselves as being rich.

I'm using the term "rich" here to mean having more money than you need to have a very comfortable life.

Lifestyles adapt very quickly to absorb extra earnings, and not even with extravagant outgoings. Buying a new car, and changing it every year, having extra holidays during the year, buying a mobile home or holiday home, joining an exclusive golf club, joining a sailing club, eating out every day or every other day, etc. all very quickly become 'normal' things for you and you do not see them as luxuries.

Montgomery Burns summed it up very well, when a kid said to him "you're the richest man alive".

"Yes" he said, "but I'd give it all up tomorrow for just a little bit more"

Imagine being those 3 paypal employees that came up with youtube in 2005, then google buying it off them for $1.5 billion..................JACKPOT!!!!!!!

Nope! There's always that bigger house. The fancier car. The longer holidays. The swisher clothes.

But even if you are there's no harm in putting it away, either for retirement (or a rainy day)

This is what mega rich looks like..

I'm scared of having serious wealth. I'd easily lose any sense the struggling years bestowed upon me.

If I were rich, I'd change to a phone contract instead of using pay-as-you-go.

I'd also buy a new mug with the handle not broken off.

Eh, even if I had the money I wouldn't be making much of a difference in my life.

I've got no interest in owning a mansion, sports cars, yatchs, etc.

Me neither, but money would make a huge difference to my quality of life. Just not having to worry about everyday costs would be amazing.
